Breast Cancer Awareness Month: your reminder to know when you should be screened. 🎗️

For women at average risk, annual clinical breast exams and mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, talk with your healthcare provider about whether you may need additional or earlier screening.

Screening can help find breast cancer before symptoms appear, when there may be more options for successful treatment. đź©·

đź’ˇ Knowing your risk, what changes to watch for and when to get screened can help you take a more active role in your breast health.

A strong turnout and an important step toward early detection. đź’ś

At this year’s Barbershop Bash Bayou in Morgan City, we provided 90 free colorectal and prostate cancer screenings, and 20% of those screened had never been screened before.

Hosted at Skinner’s Barbershop, the event brought cancer screening directly into the community alongside biometric screenings, health vendors, food, music and family-friendly activities.

Thank you to everyone who came out, encouraged someone to get screened or helped make the day possible. Reaching people where they are can make an important difference in helping more individuals take charge of their health.

Advanced technology can change the way cancer is treated. Human connection can change the way that treatment is experienced. đź’ś

In a recent feature from NOLA.com, Patrick Dunne shares how both became central to his cancer journey at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

After concerning symptoms led him to Dr. Scott Delacroix, urologic oncologist at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Metairie, Patrick learned his cancer was advanced and would require a specialized treatment approach. Dr. Delacroix helped guide him through his options, including treatment with the Elekta Unity MRI-guided adaptive radiation therapy system in Baton Rouge.

But alongside that advanced care came something just as memorable, the relationships Patrick built with the team around him.

From conversations about opera and fashion to small moments of encouragement during treatment, Patrick found a level of connection that helped make a difficult experience feel deeply personal.

Today, he is in remission and sharing his story so others facing cancer know what comprehensive care can look like.

When Paul Miller learned he had prostate cancer, he found a team at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington that helped him feel confident about what came next. But when he looks back on his experience, it's not only the treatment he remembers...
It's Dr. Elson taking the time to listen. His nurse, Brianna, answering his questions. And Roy in guest services greeting him with a kindness that made difficult days feel a little easier.

“When you’re going in for treatment, you’re worried and anxious and you’re scared,” Paul said. “And Roy just had this really profound effect on me.”

Paul's story reminds us that expert cancer care is about more than the treatment itself. It's also about the people who help you feel cared for along the way. 🙌

What a meaningful way to celebrate 55 years of mission, generosity and impact. đź’ś

This past Sunday, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center hosted IGNITE, our inaugural brunch celebrating the extraordinary role philanthropy plays in helping us improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer.

Surrounded by longtime supporters, friends and partners, we reflected on the vision first set in motion by our founders, Anna B. Lipsey and Dr. M.J. Rathbone, Jr., a belief that every person facing cancer should have access to exceptional care close to home.

That vision continues today because of the generosity of those who invest in our mission and help make advanced treatment, early detection, research, education and support possible for patients and families across the region.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for IGNITE and to all who continue helping carry this legacy forward!

📸 Take a look at a few moments from a very special afternoon.

A cancer diagnosis can come with a lot of questions. You don't have to find every answer on your own. 🫶

At Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, patient navigation is an important part of how we care for patients and families. Our navigation team includes registered nurses, social workers and dietitians dedicated to helping patients overcome barriers and access the medical and psychosocial support they need.

That can mean answering questions, coordinating care, arranging transportation, connecting patients with specialists and support services, and helping families understand what comes next.

From pre-diagnosis through treatment and survivorship, our navigators are there to help make the path forward feel a little clearer. ❤️ It's another way we're working to provide comprehensive cancer care centered around each individual patient.

During GYN Cancer Awareness Month, we’re reminding women that changes in their health are worth paying attention to, and that getting answers may start with asking more questions.

If you’ve received a diagnosis, have concerns about persistent symptoms or simply want another perspective on your care, seeking a second opinion can help you feel more informed and confident about your next steps.

At Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, you can connect directly with one of our physicians to discuss your diagnosis, treatment options or concerns. A referral is not always required to start that conversation. If something doesn’t feel right, or if you’d like another expert perspective, don’t wait to take the next step.

To make an appointment with one of our physicians, visit the link in the first comment.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day. 🎗️

At Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, we join communities across the country in honoring the strength, resilience and hope of cancer survivors.

Behind every survivor is a journey filled with challenges, milestones, courage and the support of loved ones who walked beside them along the way.

Today, we celebrate the survivors in our community and recognize the incredible strength they show every day. Their stories remind us why this work matters and inspire us to continue bringing compassionate, patient-centered cancer care close to home.

To every survivor: thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey. We celebrate you today and every day. đź’ť

For our first Melanoma Monday, we’re sharing a powerful reminder of why early detection matters. 💛

When Trudie Jarreau visited Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center's Prevention on the Go mobile medical unit for a free mammogram, she never expected that mentioning a small spot on her neck would lead to a diagnosis that could save her life. With support from our team and patient navigation services, she was able to get answers and begin the follow-up care she needed.

🎗️ Her story is a meaningful reminder not to ignore changes in your skin and not to put off getting screened.
