✨ Calling all muralists & q***r artists! 🎨🏳️‍🌈

We’re giving our space at Southampton Community Healthcare a little cosmetic refresh, and we have one BIG blank wall right at the front of our practice that is begging to become something stunning.

As a proudly q***r healthcare office, we’re dreaming of a mural that feels fun, colorful, retro, unapologetically q***r, and uniquely St. Louis. Something that celebrates our community, our culture, and the people who walk through our doors every day. 💖🌈✨

We’re a nonprofit, so our resources are limited but what we can offer is a pretty incredible canvas: your artwork displayed for thousands of patients and community members to see as they walk through our doors.

🌈 LGBTQ+ History Fun Fact! 🌈

Did you know the first known gay rights organization in the United States was founded over 100 years ago?

In 1924, Henry Ge**er established the Society for Human Rights in Chicago. At a time when simply existing as an LGBTQ+ person could lead to arrest, discrimination, and persecution, this organization courageously advocated for equality, dignity, and human rights.

While the organization lasted less than a year due to legal and social persecution, its impact reached far beyond its time. It helped lay the foundation for future LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and the movement that continues today.

As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, it’s important to remember that freedom and equality have not been experienced equally by all Americans.

In 1962, Illinois became one of the first states to repeal its anti-sodomy laws. It wasn’t until June 26, 2003, that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled anti-sodomy laws unconstitutional nationwide.
On June 26, 2015, marriage equality became the law of the land, and on June 15, 2020, LGBTQIA+ individuals gained explicit federal workplace protections under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

These milestones are powerful reminders that while America declared its independence in 1776, many members of the LGBTQIA+ community have spent generations fighting for the freedom to live authentically, safely, and with equal rights under the law.

At Southampton Community Healthcare, we recognize that the pursuit of equality, dignity, and compassionate care for all is ongoing. We remain committed to creating a space where every person is respected, valued, and empowered to be exactly who they are.

Southampton Community Healthcare was founded in 1986 by Dr. David Prelutsky, whom is a pioneer in HIV care within the primary care setting. His vision being simple yet revolutionary, to provide compassionate and affirming healthcare to all people, regardless of diagnosis, race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Today, we reflect with deep gratitude on the legacy Dr. Prelutsky created. He built more than a medical practice he created a safe and welcoming space where LGBTQ+ individuals could receive care, find community, work, and be seen for who they are.

As members and allies of the q***r community, we honor Dr. Prelutsky’s lifelong dedication to LGBTQ+ health and advocacy. His leadership guided our community through one of the most devastating chapters in q***r history, the AIDS crisis, with unwavering compassion, courage, and humanity.

In challenging times, we look back on his example with admiration and hope. His commitment to dignity, inclusion, and exceptional care continues to inspire every provider and staff member at Southampton Community Healthcare. We remain dedicated to carrying his mission and legacy forward by continuing to make a difference in q***r healthcare for generations to come.
