Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) can influence breathing patterns, craniofacial growth, sleep quality, and speech development.

Common signs include:
• Chronic mouth breathing
• Tongue thrust
• Open-mouth posture (day and night)
• Poor or restless sleep

When the tongue rests low in the mouth instead of on the palate, it can impact airway development and dental alignment over time.

Early identification allows us to:
✔ Improve nasal breathing
✔ Establish proper oral rest posture
✔ Normalize swallow patterns
✔ Support healthy facial growth

If your child presents with multiple signs listed above, a comprehensive myofunctional evaluation can determine whether intervention is appropriate.

Mouth breathing is more than just a habit — it can impact a child’s speech, sleep, and even facial growth over time.

When the mouth stays open at rest, the tongue often sits low, which can affect oral development and make certain speech sounds harder to produce.

Myofunctional therapy helps address the root cause by supporting:

✔ nasal breathing
✔ proper tongue posture
✔ lip closure
✔ healthy oral function
✔️ chewing & swallowing patterns

If you’re noticing mouth breathing, snoring, open-mouth posture, or speech concerns, it may be worth looking deeper.

Did you know over half of our Speech-Language Pathologists are trained in GOMAP®?!

GOMAP® (Guided Oral Movements with Active Patterning) is an intervention-focused approach for SLPs and OTs, supporting early oral function from birth so babies can thrive. Through guided, hands-on movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, and cheeks, GOMAP helps build the strong foundations needed for safe, successful feeding.

🥄 Why it matters:
✔️ Supports early feeding skills
✔️ Improves coordination for chewing and swallowing
✔️ Encourages food acceptance
✔️ Creates calmer, more confident mealtimes

We’re passionate about helping babies and toddlers thrive—right from the start. 💚
