The best detox habits don’t come in a bottle.

Your body already has its own detox system. Your liver, gut, kidneys, lymphatic system, and skin work around the clock to process and clear waste. The goal isn’t a dramatic reset. It’s giving those systems what they need to do their job.

Some of the best ways to support them are everyday habits. Deep sleep is when your brain’s glymphatic system clears waste. Fiber helps move waste out through the gut, and vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts support your liver’s natural detox pathways. Daily movement and sweating, including time in the infrared sauna, keep circulation and your lymphatic system moving.

Real support comes from consistent habits and a plan that’s personal to you. You don’t need to change everything at once. Pick one habit and start there.

Which habit are you starting with?

“Fibermaxxing” — the social media trend around intentionally increasing your fiber intake — is gaining traction as people begin to pay more attention to gut health, blood sugar, cholesterol, and longevity.

Unlike plenty of other wellness trends, this one has a strong foundation—with a couple of important caveats.

“Fibermaxxing is great in theory,” says Sarah Bird, DNP, functional medicine nurse practitioner at PALM Health. Fiber is one of the most beneficial things you can add to your diet, she explains, particularly because of its effects on the gut microbiome and the many systems connected to it.

However, there are two areas where the “fibermaxxing” trend might fall short. Keep reading to find out.

The essential type of rest you’re probably not getting enough of ⬇️
-
We tend to think rest = sleep, watching TV, or reading. Those are forms of rest—and they’re important—but there’s something essential missing.
-
Your mind and body need three different types of restoration:
-
• Sleep → physical repair, energy, memory
• Recreation → stepping out of routine, enjoyment (reading, gardening, crafting, watching something)
• Relaxation → an alert but calm state where you’re not task-oriented
-
✨ And relaxation is the form of rest that is less and less common these days.
-
Because we’ve gotten so used to constant stimulation—scrolling, working, watching, multitasking—that we rarely give ourselves space to simply “be”.
-
True relaxation looks like:
-
• Letting your mind wander
• Sitting in stillness
• No screens, no tasks, no planning
• Just quiet presence
-
✨ In this mind-wandering state, your brain enters what we call “Resting Connectivity State,” in which some of its most essential functions take place.
-
A resilient, well-regulated life needs this form of rest in balance with sleep and recreation.
-
Save this as a reminder to build in real rest, not just more activity in disguise.

Detoxification matters more today than it ever has before—those “detox cleanse” ads you’ve seen aren’t wrong about that.
-
In the twenty-first century, we are living with physical and mental toxins that did not exist centuries or even decades ago—from our food to our environment to the products we use every day to the ever-present news and media.
-
We need to take extra steps to support those pathways in ways we haven’t necessarily needed to before. The catch is, those well-marketed juice cleanses and detox diets aren’t actually going to get you anywhere. Why? Because it’s an incomplete solution.
