3 Signs You’re Doing DBT-Informed Therapy Instead of Actual DBT

You advocate for mindfulness. You teach distress tolerance. You talk about emotion regulation (all. the. time.). You have a stack of photocopied DBT handouts (some even laminated!) sitting on your desk.

So…are you doing DBT?

Maybe.

There is an important distinction between using DBT-informed strategies and practicing comprehensive, adherent Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

You love your child more than anything. But some days it feels like every request turns into an battle worthy of an Avengers movie and by the end, you really aren't sure if you are the hero or the villan.

Tiny disappointments become enormous meltdowns.

You find yourself constantly trying to prevent the next explosion.

You're exhausted . . . and you're wondering whether anything will actually help.

We Help Parents Of Highly Emotional, Intensely Sensitive Children Learn Practical Skills That Reduce Conflict, Strengthen Connection, And Create Calmer Homes.

After this course you'll know how to:

✓ Respond without escalating arguments

✓ Help your child recover from emotional meltdowns faster

✓ Reduce power struggles

✓ Reinforce the behaviors you actually want

✓ Set limits without constant yelling

✓ Stay calmer yourself

✓ Build a home where everyone feels understood

Highly emotional kids are what we call “Super Sensors”. They react quickly, feel things intensely, and have difficulties landing back on solid ground after an episode of strong emotions.

Parenting an emotionally dysregulated child, or Super Sensor requires a Super Parent, but none of us are born with a Super Parent cape. We need support and training to become what our Super Sensor kids need from us. There is no shame in that.

The best way to teach an emotionally sensitive child that there is always room to grow and improve is to model that growth. In this parent coaching program, parents learn and practice skills for creating an environment that fosters growth and change for all family members.

Most parenting training advice focuses on controlling behavior.

This program teaches you how emotions drive behavior—and how changing the emotional environment changes the behavior.

You'll learn practical skills drawn from Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children (DBT-C), one of the most researched treatments for emotion dysregulation. By providing emotion regulation skills for parents, children learn to reduce their own explosive behaviors and meltdowns.

Family support matters!
People with strong social support consistently have better mental health outcomes than those who feel isolated. Supportive relationships are one of the strongest predictors of recovery across many mental health conditions.

This supportive class educates caregivers about validation, deescalation, and regulation skills they can model.

Next class starts soon and will fill up. Register today!

For a treatment that's backed by decades of research and used around the world, DBT has accumulated an impressive collection of myths. Somewhere along the way, "dialectical behavior therapy" became shorthand for “that treatment for borderline personality disorder where therapists never sleep because they're answering coaching calls at 2:00 a.m.”
Let's debunk a few myths right now -->

Great therapy doesn't happen by accident. It happens by design.
Most clinicians have had that moment in session where they're thinking:
"What should I do next?"

The best DBT therapists aren't winging it—they're following a conceptual framework that helps them know what to target, why it matters, and where to go next.

That's exactly what inspired our new DBT Workshop Series.

Whether you're new to DBT or looking to strengthen your existing practice, these workshops are designed to help you:
🔹 Build a stronger conceptual understanding of DBT—not just memorize skills.
🔹 Design more intentional, effective therapy sessions.
🔹 Leave with practical tools you can start using with clients the very next day.

This fall, we're offering live, interactive workshops covering the foundations of DBT, skills training, and individual DBT therapy.

Attend one workshop or build your own learning path by attending the full series.

This is a live, in person training, so seats are limited, and we'd love to have you join us.
