If I had a crisp Dr Pepper for everyone time I’ve had a parent tell me “I wish we would have gotten help sooner,” I’d have a lot Dr Peppers 🤪 It’s not because they ignored the signs, or that they weren’t paying attention but because they weren’t sure if they should bring it up, ask again how to get help, or trust their gut.

If you’ve ever left an appointment thinking, “I wish I would’ve said something…” this post is for you! As a mom and clinician who works closely with families of all ages, I’m here to remind you that you don’t need the perfect words, you don’t need to be 100% sure, you just need to start the conversation.

You know your child best, don’t forget that 💜 be sure to save this post for your visit!

Baby’s don’t just go from months of laying to sitting on their own one day… they need to have a balance of protective reactions (aka catching themselves with their hands to the sides), core strength to prevent falling backwards, and coordination to do all of this together! Noticing something missing and they just keep face planting? It could be time for a little bit of extra help from a pediatric specializing physical therapist!

I’m Dr Alyssa, pediatric physical therapist, mom of 2 (soon to be 3), and owner of Together in Motion Therapy in St Louis, MO. Be sure to follow along for more tips, tricks, and things to look out for as your child develops! Looking for a little bit of extra help? Send me a DM and let’s chat! ♥️

As long as your baby’s feet are on the ground and their hands are off of the floor, that means they’re actively standing, right?! Actually, the answer is no (depending on how they do it)…

Standing in a walker or activity center with a sling to hold them (no matter how flat their feet on the ground are) is NOT active standing ❌

Standing against a surface with their YING
whole belly leaning with or without holding on) is NOT active standing ❌

Active and true standing = belly and
bottom muscles are turned on and working together with the ankles and knees to balance and hold themselves up, progressively decreasing outside support (aka moving from holding on with 2 ➡️ 1 ➡️ 0 hands!)

I’m Dr. Alyssa, owner of Together in Motion Therapy, pediatric physical therapist, and milestone coach 💛

If you’re concerned about your baby’s movement, milestones, standing, balance, or development, let’s talk ✨ Early support can make a huge difference, and I’d love to help your family feel confident moving forward!

Baby #3 is going to be here before I know it and it’s safe to say that I have learned a thing or two not only from being a mom but also as a pediatric physical therapist that influences a lot of what I’ll be getting to use to make life easier this time 👶🏼💙

If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that the “best” baby gear isn’t always the most popular, expensive, or trendy. It’s the gear that supports development, encourages movement, and makes real life easier for families.

Some of these opinions might be unpopular, but after years of working with babies and raising my own, these are the items I’m skipping and the ones I’m happily buying again.

As you prep for your baby of your own, just remember that…
✨ Baby gear is a tool that is there to help, not a requirement.
✨ Containers should be used during active, awake, and supervised time for no more than 15-30 minutes at a time followed by double the amount of time of open/free play
✨ Containers can be a great place to safely set your baby while you need to do something or just a break but the floor is still one of the best places for babies to actively learn and grow

What baby item would you NEVER buy again… or couldn’t live without? 👇

💌 Comment “BABY GEAR” and I’ll send you the link to all of my favorite registry recommendations!

Hey parents traveling with little ones this summer, don’t let the airport scaries get to you! Instead, save this for later to help make the airport your playground while waiting for your boarding section to be called ✈️ Learning gross motor skills and getting energy out doesn’t have to be anything fancy, it just requires a little bit of creativity and a whole lot of giggles 🤪

Today we pause to remember and honor those who gave so much for our country ❤️🤍 Wishing you and your family a Memorial Day filled with love, comfort, and time together!

Dr Alyssa will be out of office this week while I spend some much needed time with my own family before baby #3 comes☀️ Sessions will resume the week of June 1st!

I’m so grateful for all of the families who continue to trust me with their little ones and support this small business year round. Thank you to each and everyone of you!

“Just give them a stool” sounds way too simple… until you realize how much it changes! 👀

When our feet don’t have support, our body has to work SO much harder just to stay upright and stable. That means more shifting, more fidgeting, more slouching, more fatigue, and less energy left over for what we think of as easy, every day tasks as an adults.

Sometimes it’s not behavior, sometimes their body just doesn’t feel supported enough to relax and function well ✨A stable base = a calmer, more efficient body.

Some of my favorite easy ways to help:
✔️ foot stools under toilets
✔️ boxes/books under chairs
✔️ adjustable high chairs with foot plates
✔️ supportive seating that lets hips, knees, AND feet feel grounded

Little changes can make a HUGE difference in comfort, regulation, feeding, and toileting. 💛

Save this for later if your little one struggles with sitting at meals or potty time!

So thankful this family trusted me to support them during such a hard and overwhelming season ❤️As a mom who has been there myself, I know first hand how feeding struggles can take such a toll on the whole family, which is why helping parents find simple, realistic ways to make everyday life feel easier means so much to me. Watching feeding go from stressful to calm and connected again is something I never take for granted. 🫶

If feeding has felt harder than you expected, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. Let’s set up a time to chat about if physical therapy can help!

Sometimes feeding struggles are about more than just the mouth 🤍 A baby’s posture, tension, nervous system, and comfort all play a role in how feeding feels and goes for both baby and parent. Physical therapy can help with all of this to make it a calm and enjoyable experience ✨

You do not have to “just push through it.” Help and support are here. Let’s support you both, together!

Sometimes these little things aren’t “just a phase” or “just their personality” 🤍 They can actually be signs that certain movements feel harder for your child’s body right now:

• Avoiding the playground or always asking for help → they may feel unsteady, unsure, or not confident in their body
• Tripping or falling often → their balance, coordination, or body awareness may need extra support
• Having a hard time jumping with both feet → jumping takes more strength and coordination than most people realize
• Still doing 2 feet on each stair after age 3 or crawling or using hands on stairs→ they may be lacking balance, strength, or confidence on one leg
• Struggling to put pants on standing up → balancing on one foot and staying upright can be really tricky

And the good news? These are all things pediatric PT can help with through play 💛 Sometimes a little extra help can make everyday things feel easier, safer, and way more fun.

If more than one of these sounds familiar, this is your sign to stop wondering if you should reach out 🫶🏼 Dr Alyssa is here to help St Louis & local families at 314-626-3214 or see links in the bio!
