For decades, mental health has largely been viewed through the lens of the brain.
But the brain depends on the rest of the body throughout every second of every day, and it needs a constant supply of oxygen, nutrients, and energy, plus the right metabolic environment to function at its best.
When those systems get disrupted, brain function can be affected too.
This doesn't mean that every mental health condition has the same cause or that metabolic health explains every issue.
But it does raise an important question: What if understanding metabolic health could help us better understand mental health?
That question is at the heart of metabolic psychiatry.
