A hematoma occurs when blood leaks into the surrounding tissue.

🩸 PHLEBOTOMY STUDENTS, LET’S TALK VEIN SELECTION! 💉

🚨 Not every visible vein is the best vein to use!

Knowing where to draw blood is important, but knowing which sites to avoid or approach with caution is just as essential!

⚠️ Before performing venipuncture, always assess:

🩸 Hand veins and smaller veins
🩸 Areas with bruising, hematomas, or scarring
🩸 Arms with active IV infusions
🩸 Areas with infections or skin injuries
🩸 Tattooed areas
🩸 Lower extremities

💡 REMEMBER: Some of these sites are not automatically off-limits. Proper assessment, patient history, and facility policies help determine the safest collection site.

Did you know that taking an accurate blood pressure reading is more than just putting on a cuff? 👀

At Stepping Stone Medical, our students learn the importance of proper cuff placement, cuff sizing, and understanding systolic and diastolic pressure.

💉 A few things to remember:
✅ The top number (systolic) measures pressure when the heart beats.

✅ The bottom number (diastolic) measures pressure when the heart relaxes.

✅ Using the correct cuff size is essential for an accurate reading.

✅ Proper patient positioning makes a difference!
