❤️ FROM MY HEART TO YOURS — When Sleep Doesn't Come

I have struggled with sleep for most of my life.

Some of this, I believe, goes back to long-term stress and trauma during childhood. And some of it, I will readily admit, has simply been poor sleep habits!

Over the years, I've tried many of the things we're told are "good" sleep habits. Some have worked for me. Some haven't.

And that's something I think we sometimes forget:

We are all different.

Our nervous systems are unique. When your nervous system has spent a long time in fight-or-flight, it can become accustomed to being on alert—even when there is no immediate danger.

Remember, your nervous system is doing what it was designed to do: protect you.

Our job is to begin helping it recognize when it is safe to settle.

Over the years, I've tried many approaches. I've had hormone testing through what's called a DUTCH test and taken supplements recommended based on those results. I've worked on getting to bed at a regular time. I've changed routines. I've listened to experts and learned about sleep and the brain.

Some things helped for a while.

But there were still many nights when my body was tired and my brain was stuck in overdrive.

I'd lie there thinking and thinking and thinking...

Why did I say that today?

Should I have done something differently?

What do I need to do tomorrow?

And then there was the anxiety.

At times, especially after my mom transitioned, I would wake during the night with anxiety that sometimes became actual panic.

And, of course, once you're awake, another thought can quickly join the others:

"I HAVE to get back to sleep!"

Then you start worrying about how little sleep you're getting and how terrible you're going to feel tomorrow.

One thing I learned from Dr. Caroline Leaf really stayed with me. She teaches that the fear and anxiety about not sleeping can actually be more harmful to our brain and body than the lack of sleep itself.

That was profound for me.

Because suddenly I began to see the mind-body connection happening right there in the middle of the night.

I'm awake.

My mind says, "Oh no, I'm not sleeping."

That thought creates anxiety.

My body responds to the anxiety.

My nervous system becomes more alert.

And now I'm trying desperately to sleep while my body is receiving signals that it needs to stay alert!

Understanding that began changing the way I approached those nights.

Instead of becoming frightened or frustrated because I wasn't sleeping, I began learning relaxation techniques and ways of helping my mind and body settle.

It didn't happen overnight. And I certainly don't sleep perfectly now.

But I've learned something important along the way:

Sometimes we need to stop fighting our nervous system and begin working WITH it.

Think about everything you have experienced throughout your life. Your nervous system may have learned protective patterns during times when you genuinely needed them.

Those patterns don't always disappear simply because life becomes safer.

So yes—educate yourself.

Listen to the experts.

Practice healthy sleep habits.

Try different approaches and pay attention to what actually helps your mind and body.

And seek professional help when you feel you need it.

But please don't compare yourself with someone who says, "Just do this and you'll sleep eight hours every night!"

What settles one person's nervous system may not settle yours.

Over the years, I've found several relaxation techniques that have helped me personally. If you'd like to know what has worked for me, you're welcome to message me. Maybe I'll make that another From My Heart to Yours post.

And finally, remember how uniquely you were created:

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
Psalm 139:14

Tonight, if sleep doesn't come as easily as you'd like, perhaps instead of immediately worrying about it, remind yourself:

"Right now, I am safe. I don't have to force myself to sleep. I can simply allow myself to rest."

Sometimes learning to rest comes before learning to sleep. ❤️

None of these cost anything, and that’s exactly why they get overlooked.

We’re so used to thinking healing requires a supplement, a protocol, or a $200 device that we forget the fastest reset available to us is usually free and already in front of us.

A hum, a yawn, five minutes outside.

These aren’t small things. They’re direct lines to your vagus nerve, and your body is built to respond to them.

Save this one for the next time you’re spiraling and don’t know where to start. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Which of these is missing from your week right now?

From My Heart to Yours 💜

I've been learning so much about the connection between chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), lipedema, and lymphedema. I want to share part of my journey in hopes it encourages someone else who may be searching for answers.

For months I kept telling healthcare providers, "Something changed after my fall." In October 2024, I fell and sustained a severe hamstring tear. Thankfully, surgery was not needed, but I knew my body was different afterward.

Some providers listened. Others did not.

I later discovered a note in my medical record from a physician I chose not to continue seeing that attributed my leg issues to obesity, yet that conversation never happened during my appointment. That experience reminded me how important it is to be your own advocate.

Here are a few things I am learning:

• Lipedema has a strong genetic component. Research suggests that in someone who is predisposed, trauma, surgery, or hormonal changes may trigger symptoms or make the condition more noticeable. While researchers continue to learn more, my fall appears to have been the event that brought my symptoms to light.

• Ask questions. You know your body. If you feel dismissed, seek another opinion. A good healthcare provider will partner with you.

• Keep learning. Lipedema is more than fat. It can involve connective tissue, the lymphatic system, and the veins.

Most importantly, I am choosing hope.

This is a health challenge—not my identity. I choose not to say "my lipedema" because it is something I am walking through, not who I am.

God says, "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine" (Isaiah 43:1).

He does not call us by our diagnosis. He calls us His own.

Your diagnosis may be part of your story, but it is never your identity.

A reminder of hope and healing found in unconditional LOVE.

June Is PTSD Awareness Month

June is recognized as PTSD Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and remind people that healing is possible.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) can develop after a traumatic event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional distress, and avoiding reminders of the trauma.

CPTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) often develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, especially when a person feels trapped, powerless, or unsafe over time. Along with PTSD symptoms, CPTSD may involve chronic shame, difficulty trusting others, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, and a persistent sense of danger even when the threat is gone.

Trauma is not simply something that happened in the past. It can affect the nervous system, emotions, relationships, and physical health long after the original experience.

The good news is that healing is possible. Recovery may involve counseling, support groups, faith, holistic approaches, healthy relationships, nervous system regulation, or a combination of supports. Healing is rarely a straight line, but every step forward matters.

This month, let's replace judgment with understanding, stigma with compassion, and silence with meaningful conversations about trauma and recovery.

What is one thing you wish more people understood about PTSD or CPTSD?

From My Heart to Yours 💜

In my last post, I shared part of my personal health journey involving lymphedema, lipedema, and venous insufficiency. Some readers naturally focused on the diagnoses themselves, and that’s completely understandable. But my deeper reason for sharing was this:

Even those of us who are called to help bring healing to others still need healing ourselves.

Healers are not exempt from physical challenges, emotional struggles, or seasons that require deeper learning and self-care. We are human too.

As I continue sharing my journey, my hope is not only to bring awareness, but also to help others who may be silently struggling with these same conditions feel less alone and more informed.

Over the next several weeks, I’ll begin explaining what lymphedema, lipedema, and venous insufficiency are individually, and later I’ll talk more about how these conditions can overlap and connect.

But I also want to say this clearly: I do not speak from fear or defeat.

I believe healing is possible. I speak life, restoration, and healing over myself while also taking practical steps to support my body through education, lifestyle changes, and understanding the deeper genetic, hormonal, inflammatory, and lymphatic connections involved.

"But I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect—life in its fullness until you overflow!” — John 10:10 TPT

This is only the beginning of the conversation, and I’ll continue sharing more tomorrow.

A reminder of hope and healing found in unconditional LOVE.
