🚨 STOP! Taking antibiotics for a cold or flu could be doing more harm than good.
Many people believe that antibiotics are a cure-all for infections. Feeling sick with a runny nose, cough, sore throat, or fever? Some immediately reach for antibiotics, hoping for a quick recovery.
❌ MYTH: Antibiotics cure viral infections.
✅ FACT: Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections. They do NOT kill viruses that cause illnesses such as the common cold, influenza (flu), COVID-19, and most sore throats.
Here's the problem: when antibiotics are used unnecessarily, bacteria can adapt and become resistant to these medicines. This is called antibiotic resistance.
⚠️ Why is antibiotic resistance dangerous?
• Infections become harder to treat.
• Medicines that once worked may no longer be effective.
• Hospital stays can become longer.
• Medical costs can increase.
• Serious infections can become life-threatening.
Imagine a future where a simple infection can no longer be treated because antibiotics no longer work. This is already happening around the world.
💡 What should you do instead?
✔️ Rest and get enough sleep.
✔️ Drink plenty of fluids.
✔️ Follow your healthcare provider's advice.
✔️ Only take antibiotics when prescribed by a qualified medical professional.
Remember: Not every infection needs antibiotics, but every misuse of antibiotics increases the risk of resistance.
