SAS provides support services and accommodations to OSU and NOC-STW students with disabilities.

The application period is currently open for the US Department of Labor's Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP). Applications close October 4th!

WRP is designed as an employment pathway for students and recent graduates with disabilities to connect with potential jobs and internships at federal agencies.

The only materials required for the initial application are a Schedule A letter verifying the candidate has a disability, a transcript showing current or recent enrollment in a college program (including graduate, undergraduate, and certificate programs), and a draft resume. Once approved for the program, the candidate can upload their updated resume to USAJOBS and add agency and job preferences. In December, federal employers will gain access to the database and reach out to candidates who are a good fit.

Think accommodations give students an unfair advantage? Here are some examples of common accommodation myths in higher education.
• Accommodations give students an unfair advantage. Accommodations provide equal access in the classroom without lowering academic standard requirements.
• Students can only register at the beginning of the semester. Students can register at any time with Oklahoma State University's Student Accessibility Services (OSU SAS).
• Only visible disabilities qualify for accommodations. SAS can provide students with mental health challenges, learning disabilities, and other "invisible" disabilities with accommodations too!

Every year in July, Disability Pride Month is celebrated to recognize the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of people with disabilities. This celebration helps affirm that disability is a natural and valuable part of human diversity, not a deficit or condition to be fixed.

Disability Pride Month was first celebrated in Boston in 1990, after the landmark passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and has continued to challenge the notion that people with disabilities must conform to norms to lead meaningful, full lives. At its root, Disability Pride Month is about being accepted on our own terms and recognizing disability as part of our identities, not something to be changed, hidden, or fixed.

Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was a groundbreaking step toward equality, ensuring that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone.

Today, let’s take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and recognize that there’s still work to do to create a world that’s accessible and inclusive for all.

Let’s continue to advocate, learn, and build communities that are welcoming and equitable for people with disabilities!

Before 1999, it was standard practice within the US to institutionalize individuals with mental health and developmental disabilities, rather than providing support for them to live in their communities. This changed when Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, who had both spent years in and out of institutions, brought a case to the Supreme Court to fight for their right to live and be supported in their communities.

This landmark case became known as the Omstead Decision, granting state funding for support and services in the community for disabled individuals. This case clearly demonstrated that the practice of institutionalizing people who can live and succeed in community settings perpetuates stigma for people with disabilities. It limits those individuals from participating in important parts of daily life, such as forming relationships, gaining independence, and getting involved with their community. The Omstead Decision has helped so many people with disabilities return to their community and receive the support needed to thrive.

Each year on June 27, we recognize National PTSD Awareness Day and all the lives that have been impacted by it.

Although PTSD is a condition initially associated with veterans, around 10-20% of adults in the US who have experienced trauma may go on to develop PTSD. Today, we strive to bring awareness about PTSD, educate about the signs and symptoms associated with PTSD, and destigmatize seeking treatment.

Join us in recognizing National PTSD Awareness Day by wearing teal, the color of the PTSD ribbon, or reaching out to someone who may be struggling with mental health or PTSD. Together, we can show those living with PTSD that they are not alone!

Eunice Kennedy Shriver noticed that there were few opportunities for intellectually disabled children to attend summer camps, so she decided to do something about it. In June of 1962, she launched the first-ever camp for people with intellectual disabilities, called Camp Shriver. Eunice recruited mentors and participants from local schools, with 36 children and 26 counselors making up the first camp session. Camp Shriver broke down stereotypes about intellectually disabled children, opening opportunities for them to integrate into the community, showcase their athletic abilities, and have fun with peers and mentors alike.

Eventually, the opening of this camp grew to a much bigger mission to serve children with intellectual disabilities, leading to the first-ever Special Olympics in 1968, held at Chicago’s Soldier Field. More than 1,000 athletes attended the first Special Olympics. Today, the legacy that Eunice Shriver set in motion is going strong, with an estimated over five million athletes competing in the Special Olympics worldwide each year.

Each June, Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month is celebrated to increase public knowledge about Alzheimer’s and other dementias, support understanding and strategies for good brain health, and recognize the journeys of those affected. Since the exact cause of Alzheimer’s is still unknown, the annual campaign also serves to advance research and bring hope to the millions of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s every year.
