Oklahoma ABLE Tech promotes the availability of assistive technology (AT) devices and services for people with disabilities. AT is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the capabilities of people with disabilities. Assistive technology allows people with disabilities to function independently in recreation, education, employment and daily living activities.

More than 100 Oklahomans are waiting for blood pressure monitors.

Through the Device Reutilization Program, staff connect gently used and surplus medical equipment with Oklahomans who need it. Right now, more than 100 people are waiting for a blood pressure monitor, and we’re asking for help to meet that need.

If you have a new or gently used wrist cuff or upper-arm blood pressure monitor you no longer need, consider donating it to Oklahoma ABLE Tech. Your donation could help someone monitor their health from home and have greater independence in managing their care. Donations help support individuals with disabilities, older adults, caregivers, and Oklahomans with limited financial resources.

Remember, making accessible content also means making social media content accessible! Our final tip for social media accessibility is: always caption your videos!

Captioning your videos not only benefits people who have hearing disabilities. Many people watch videos without sound or rely on captions to understand them.

If you post videos, make sure to:
• Use captions for all spoken dialogue.
• Check auto-captions for accuracy. Captions should be at least 99% accurate.
• Make sure important information isn't only shared through audio.

Join us for a dynamic, in-person workshop designed for educators, service providers, and administrators.

Build your knowledge, skills, and confidence in assistive technology (AT) and accessible educational materials (AEM) while learning practical ways to support students with disabilities in accessing the general curriculum, participating meaningfully in school activities, and receiving their education in the least restrictive environment (LRE).

The 2026-2027 Empowering Educators through Assistive Technology workshop model lets you get all the information in one full-day course. Pick whichever training date and location works best for you, and we will see you there!

• October 22, 2026 - Alva (Northwestern Oklahoma State University)
• January 28, 2027 - Lawton (Cameron University)

At Oklahoma ABLE Tech, our mission is to improve the lives of Oklahomans of all ages and abilities by providing access to assistive technology (AT) devices and services, financing opportunities, digital accessibility services, advocacy, and education. Each of our programs contributes to our mission and meets the requirements of the 21st Century AT Act.

The Device Demonstration Program allows individuals to compare the features and benefits of specific AT devices. Demonstrations also let participants see, touch, and try several devices to help them decide if an AT solution may work for them. Demonstrations may also provide:
• Information about the latest technology
• Low-tech solutions and adaptations
• Vendor sources with prices

Oklahoma ABLE Tech staff also offer Smart-Home Demonstrations in Stillwater and OKC. Smart home tours may include overviews of AT, remote support technologies, and durable medical equipment that gives people with disabilities a chance to be more independent at home or get remote support from family members or caregivers.

Oklahoma ABLE Tech offers free device demonstrations in person at our Stillwater office or online via video calls. There are also demonstration partners across the state so individuals can access services from wherever they are.

Don't forget, making accessible content also means making social media content accessible! This week's tip is to make hashtags screen-reader-friendly!

How you format hashtags can affect how assistive technology (AT) reads them! Capitalize each word of your multi-word hashtags ( ) and avoid all using all lowercase. This is called writing in CamelCase or PascalCase.

CamelCase hashtags are one of the easiest digital accessibility practices to implement, so before you post, remember to CamelCase your hashtags!

We are excited to introduce Mindy Cash, our new Program Manager for assistive technology (AT) in education!

Mindy earned a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and has more than 22 years of experience supporting children and adults with disabilities. She specializes in AT, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), accessible educational materials (AEM), and technology access solutions. Before joining Oklahoma ABLE Tech, Mindy served as the Connected Learning Manager at Little Light House for seven years and spent 16 years at The Children's Center Rehabilitation Hospital. She is passionate about expanding access to AT through training, technical assistance, and collaboration with educators, families, and community partners across Oklahoma.

Josh and Bethany recently presented at the Oklahoma State Department of Education's (OSDE) Special Education Conference! Tiffany Jenkins with Decoding Dyslexia OK was a co-presenter! Their session was titled Assistive Technology and Literacy: Access to Success.

During the session, educators explored the potential of assistive technology (AT) solutions for all students with disabilities and received specific recommendations related to literacy. We enjoyed this opportunity to connect with educators across the state!

Remember, making accessible content also means making social media content accessible! This week's tip for making your social media content more accessible is to describe your images with alt text!

Not everyone can see your images. Alt text makes sure they don’t miss out. Use this formula: Subject + action + context. Alt text doesn't have to be complicated! An example could be something like: "A student uses a tablet to communicate during a group project meeting."

Here are a few more tips:
• Focus on what’s important.
• Keep it short and meaningful.
• Skip phrases like “Image of” or “Photo of.”

Before you post, ask yourself: What would someone need to know if they couldn’t see this? Have I included that in my alt text?
