Did you know the Device Loan Program has assistive technology (AT) for fishing?

The StrikeFighter Sitting model is built for one-arm fishing while using standard fishing gear. The base of your fishing pole fits into the StrikeFighter and operates as a base, catching fish without removing the rod from the StrikeFighter. A belt and shoulder strap fasten the pole securely to the user. Cast your line with the available arm, then insert it in the StrikeFighter horn. Then, start reeling in when you get a bite!

The Fish Winch 4000 is an adaptive automatic fishing reel designed for people who use only one hand or arm to cast and catch fish. The cordless, electric spinning reel is easy to use and lightweight. The Fish Winch 4000 has two speeds, making it great for most freshwater fishing (bass, walleye, catfish, etc.) and light inshore saltwater fishing (flounder, trout, redfish, etc.).

The Strong Arm Rod Holder is a one-size-fits-all treated leather glove that can be worn over/under most clothing. The glove can be worn on either the left or right hand by flipping the logo to the other side. Place the fishing pole into the sleeve of the glove for added stability.

Free fishing days are coming up on June 6 and 7. Free fishing days allow anyone to fish in Oklahoma without a state license. A free paddlefish permit is still required, and some city permits may be required as well. Several Oklahoma ABLE Tech staff members and student employees organized a sensory room for the young athletes at Special Olympics Oklahoma in Stillwater earlier this month!

Athletes aged 2 to 7 had the chance to explore assistive technology (AT) tools designed to support sensory regulation, like noise-reducing headphones, fidget items, adaptable seating, weighted lap pads, and calming visuals. There was also an active space for the young athletes to get their wiggles out using recreation AT.

Sensory rooms provide a safe, calming space where individuals can regulate their emotions with sensory input. For individuals with sensory processing challenges, these spaces can reduce stress, support focus, and prevent sensory overload. AT can help build positive participation in busy, high-energy environments.

Oklahoma ABLE Tech’s Device Loan Program offers a variety of AT devices designed to support sensory regulation. Sensory supporting AT devices are available to borrow for up to six weeks for Oklahoma residents with disabilities, their family members, and the professionals who support them.

Big news from Stillwater's own LIFE Center! We're so grateful to have played a small role in this milestone!

"LIFE Center Adult Day Services is proud to share how partnership and community collaboration helped make a long-awaited dream a reality! As the LIFE Center staff worked to secure a new wheelchair-accessible van to support their participants, we connected with Oklahoma ABLE Tech, whose guidance and resources were instrumental throughout the process."

Through Oklahoma ABLE Tech's relationship with United Access, staff members connected the LIFE Center with a trusted provider who understood the unique transportation needs of individuals living with disabilities and those with age-related needs. This partnership helped LIFE Center staff navigate options for accessibility, functionality, and long-term sustainability to make the best decision for participants and families.

Transportation remains one of the greatest barriers to services for many living with disabilities and age-related needs in rural Oklahoma. The LIFE Center's new accessible van moves them one step closer to providing reliable transportation to and from the center, helping reduce isolation and improve access to engagement, care, and community connection.

"We are incredibly grateful to Oklahoma ABLE Tech for helping bridge the gap between need and solution," said a LIFE Center representative. "Their willingness to connect organizations like ours with the right partners creates meaningful impact for communities across Oklahoma. By bringing together resources, expertise, and a shared purpose, Oklahoma ABLE Tech helps organizations like the LIFE Center expand opportunities for aging well, independence, and inclusion."

The LIFE Center shared that the new van represents far more than transportation. It represents access, dignity, and connection for the individuals and families they serve every day.

It’s easy to forget that accessibility benefits everyone, but Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) helps bring that into focus. While accessibility is about ensuring people can use digital tools, information, and spaces regardless of ability, it’s really about people and how we all connect, participate, and belong.

The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion, and the more than one billion people with disabilities.

To learn more about how to get involved, visit the GAAD website at https://bit.ly/3yBua4s.
