Oklahoma ABLE Tech Making Life Accessible to Oklahomans of All Ages and Abilities

Oklahoma ABLE Tech promotes the availability of assistive technology (AT) devices and services for people with disabilities. AT is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the capabilities of people with disabilities. Assistive technology allows people with disabilities to function independently in recreation, education, employment and daily living activities.

The TechAccess Oklahoma conference staff is seeking speakers for the 2027 conference, set for March 16–17, at the Francis Tuttle Technology Center – Danforth Campus in Edmond. We’re looking for eight one-hour sessions that share practical knowledge, experiences, and ideas to advance digital accessibility in Oklahoma.

Topics may include accessibility standards and compliance, higher education, automated testing, accessible design and development, digital documents and content, assistive technology, organizational accessibility culture, AI, and more. We welcome developers, designers, educators, IT professionals, accessibility specialists, content creators, and anyone with something to share.

Proposals must include contact information, a session title and description, three learning objectives, and the intended audience and experience level. Sessions will be evaluated on relevance, practical value, clarity, and the diversity of topics and perspectives.

Important Dates:
• Submissions open – October 15, 2026
• Deadline – December 15, 2026
• Speaker notifications – Mid-January 2027
• Conference – March 16-17, 2027

Sessions will be presented live from Francis Tuttle to both in-person and virtual attendees. Speakers are expected to attend in person. The conference is free to attend. Selected presenters will receive an honorarium.

Maseda needed a wheelchair to help her during the school day. After applying for equipment through the Oklahoma ABLE Tech Device Reutilization Program, she was matched with a pediatric wheelchair.

Pediatric wheelchairs help users experience enhanced mobility and increased independence. These specialized mobility aids are designed to provide comfort and support, ensuring that children can participate in daily activities and engage with their peers effectively.

With the pediatric wheelchair, Maseda can now move more independently at school. “My daughter is excited to have the chair,” Maseda’s dad said.

Oklahoma ABLE Tech participated in the 21st Oklahoma Transition Institute (OTI), alongside OSU Student Accessibility Services (OSU SAS) and the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council (ORC) on Wednesday, October 7, at the Reed Conference Center in Midwest City, OK. Oklahoma ABLE Tech and SAS both hosted presentations with full rooms and engaged participants!

This year's theme was All In - The Power of the Team. Attendees explored resources and services available to youth with disabilities while connecting with others in the transition community. This annual event creates opportunities for meaningful collaboration, networking, and shared learning across all roles involved in supporting successful transitions for youth with disabilities.

There are several ways to make high-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems more accessible for individuals who cannot rely on their vision to select icons. Here are a few options:
• Keyguards are plastic grids that sit on top of a device’s screen and can provide tactile support for icon selection. Users can add other tactile markers, such as pom-poms or Velcro, to specific rows and columns to help locate vocabulary icons.
• Auditory scanning features are activated by external switches, allowing individuals with physical and/or vision disabilities to control communication devices and other technology using intentional movements or even sounds. Individuals can use their body (hand, foot, elbow, or knee) or their voice to activate a switch and make selections on the communication device. When a switch is activated, auditory scanning provides spoken prompts in one voice that identify navigation options and vocabulary. When the AAC user makes a selection, the device can speak the selected message in a different voice than the auditory prompts.
• Some AAC systems offer high-contrast options or allow users to make adaptations within the system to increase visual contrast. For example, a system may have a black background with brightly colored buttons to make vocabulary icons easier to see.

Join Oklahoma ABLE Tech AT professionals for a dynamic, free, in-person workshop designed for special education teachers, general education teachers, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), related service providers, administrators, and other school professionals who support students with disabilities.

The second workshop of the school year is set for October 22, 2026, at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Attendees will learn how to:
• Build knowledge of AT, AEM, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and federal
requirements related to supporting students with disabilities.
• Apply practical strategies for effectively considering AT during educational planning and decision-making.
• Discover ways to gather information, explore options, and trial AT devices as part of the AT assessment process.
• Strengthen your ability to appropriately include AT in the individualized education program (IEP) and
support successful implementation.

Eligible districts may also qualify for Project 613 Reimbursement for substitute pay and travel expenses.

At Oklahoma ABLE Tech, our mission is to improve the lives of Oklahomans of all ages and abilities by providing access to assistive technology (AT) devices and services, financing opportunities, digital accessibility services, advocacy, and education. Each of our programs contributes to our mission and meets the requirements of the 21st Century AT Act.

The Financial Loan Program partners with the Oklahoma Assistive Technology Foundation (OkAT) and BancFirst of Stillwater to provide financing options with low-interest and flexible repayment terms for Oklahomans to purchase needed AT to help them live, work, and learn independently. This program is an 8% interest rate loan with flexible lending criteria that can be repaid over 6 to 60 months, depending on the item purchased.

The Financial Loan Program also offers financial education services. Stephanie Hesser, Lending Specialist and Certified Financial Health Counselor through the National Association of Certified Credit Counselors, provides personalized financial education, including help with:
• Budgeting
• Managing collections
• Understanding and disputing credit report errors
• Recovering from identity theft
• Navigating financial crises

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices come in a variety of sizes, so consider the individual’s vision, motor, and portability needs when selecting a device. Oklahoma ABLE Tech offers Tobii-Dynavox and NovaChat AAC devices.

High-tech AAC devices come in a variety of sizes. For many high-tech devices, the number in the device name typically indicates the screen size. For example, the Tobii-Dynavox I-13 (TD I-13) has a 13-inch screen, and the NovaChat 8 has an eight-inch screen.

Some high-tech AAC devices include a size descriptor in the name that indicates the size of the Apple device used. The TD Navio Mini is similar in size to the iPad Mini, and the Via Pro is similar to the iPad Pro.

Device sizes can change over time. Check the vendor’s website for current device specifications.
