Oklahoma ABLE Tech promotes the availability of assistive technology (AT) devices and services for people with disabilities. AT is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the capabilities of people with disabilities. Assistive technology allows people with disabilities to function independently in recreation, education, employment and daily living activities.

Nikolas receives SoonerStart services and needs support to increase his upright mobility. His physical therapist, Robyn, helped Nikolas and his family with an assistive technology (AT) demonstration. During the demonstration, Nikolas explored a Kidwalk gait trainer. According to Robyn, the Kidwalk allows Nikolas to stand, explore his environment, and increase his independent mobility.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Department of Health partner to provide the SoonerStart Early Intervention Program. SoonerStart partners with Oklahoma ABLE Tech to provide AT devices and services to infants and toddlers aged birth to three with disabilities. June is Aphasia Awareness Month! Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate but does not affect their intelligence. It can happen suddenly, often after a stroke or brain injury, or develop slowly, like in Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). Oklahoma ABLE Tech's Device Loan Program offers a variety of assistive technology (AT) devices to borrow for individuals seeking greater independence!

AT devices that could assist individuals with symptoms related to Aphasia or stroke could include:
• The Day Clock with Task Alerts Hub displays the time, date, and day of the week on one side and reminders on the other side. The dry-erase board makes it easy to update your daily tasks, and the checkmarks on the right side can be used to mark completed tasks.
• The Lingraphica TouchTalk Plus offers a variety of communication options for the user, such as buttons with images and text that speak when activated, a whiteboard where letters or words can be written, or pictures can be drawn, a keyboard where words can be typed and spoken when activated, and a photo album where pictures of events, activities, individuals, and more can be saved. The tablet allows the user to customize the device to meet their needs.
• The Boogie Board is a reusable writing device that can be used to communicate. Documents can be slipped under the device, making marking up documents easy, or it can be used to help individuals brainstorm ideas. Push the button at the top of the device to clear the Boogie Board to use again.
• The Easy Grip Mug is an adaptive drinking device with a built-in internal handle that allows the user to place their hand inside the cup, reducing the need for finger strength and improving stability. A non-slip base for stability and a spill-resistant lid allow for easy everyday use.

The Fourth of July is right around the corner!

Fireworks can be a fun and festive part of the holiday, but for some, the loud noises can be overwhelming. Do you know someone who wants to enjoy the show but is sensitive to sound?

Noise-reducing earbuds or noise-canceling headphones can make a big difference in creating a more comfortable experience. Whether you're planning for the big celebration or just learning about options, most of these devices are easy to find at many retail and sporting goods stores.

Finding the right assistive technology (AT) device to meet your employment goals can take time. Oklahoma ABLE Tech's Device Loan Program provides Oklahomans the opportunity to trial a variety of AT devices to find the best device for their needs.

Examples of employment-related AT devices could be the Evoluent Vertical Mouse, the EZ See Large Print Keyboard, a flex stylus, and the OrCam MyEye 2 glasses.

The Evoluent Vertical Mouse reduces strain on the user's wrist by allowing the hand to rest in a relaxed position. The EZ See keyboard features large-print keys with a high-contrast color scheme. A flex stylus aids with gripping and uses minimal pressure to activate buttons on your device. OrCam MyEye 2 glasses use a small camera to provide instant and discreet help with reading, face recognition, color identification, and more. The camera magnetically attaches to existing eyeglasses and can be activated by pointing at an object or tapping the side of the glasses.

Check out the HandGrip and Universal Access AT Respite Kit! The kit supports individuals who have trouble gripping, holding, or manipulating everyday items. The kit includes a variety of adaptive grip aids and universal holders that can be paired with common objects to promote independence, safety, and participation in daily activities. The kits include Eazyholds, T-shaped gripping tools, a NuMuv Multi-Use Grip, AttentoBoard, adaptive foam grip set, make-up grippers, and a functional hand (universal handle).

Items in this kit can be added to utensils, grooming tools, writing instruments, technology styluses, leisure items, and household objects to improve grip stability and reduce hand fatigue.

Oklahoma ABLE Tech's AT Respite Kits provide assistive technology (AT) to help people with disabilities, mobility, or cognitive decline complete tasks more independently. Any caregiver can apply and receive a kit to borrow for up to six weeks. The kits are loaned out after an intake conversation with Oklahoma ABLE Tech staff.

Respite gives primary caregivers a break, so they can rest, travel, or spend time with family and friends. The break can last from a few hours to several weeks. A primary caregiver is someone who provides day-to-day care to another person, such as a parent caring for a child or an adult caring for an elderly family member.

Noah Sanders, a previous student employee for the Device Reutilization Program, is completing the requirements for the occupational therapy doctoral program at the University of Oklahoma. Noah worked with Oklahoma ABLE Tech staff to develop his capstone project— an assistive technology (AT) resource for adults with Down Syndrome who are interested in using AT in their jobs. The goal of Noah's project is to improve caregiver and professional knowledge of AT in vocational settings.

National Play Outside Day is a monthly event celebrated on the first Saturday of every month. We're celebrating National Play Outside Day tomorrow with some of our favorite outdoor Recreation, Sports, and Leisure assistive technology (AT)!

Recreation, Sports, and Leisure AT can be used in various environments. AT from this category can increase social interaction, physical endurance, awareness of resources and adaptive equipment, and improve gross and fine motor coordination and mental health.

Did you know the Device Loan Program has assistive technology (AT) for fishing?

The StrikeFighter Sitting model is built for one-arm fishing while using standard fishing gear. The base of your fishing pole fits into the StrikeFighter and operates as a base, catching fish without removing the rod from the StrikeFighter. A belt and shoulder strap fasten the pole securely to the user. Cast your line with the available arm, then insert it in the StrikeFighter horn. Then, start reeling in when you get a bite!

The Fish Winch 4000 is an adaptive automatic fishing reel designed for people who use only one hand or arm to cast and catch fish. The cordless, electric spinning reel is easy to use and lightweight. The Fish Winch 4000 has two speeds, making it great for most freshwater fishing (bass, walleye, catfish, etc.) and light inshore saltwater fishing (flounder, trout, redfish, etc.).

The Strong Arm Rod Holder is a one-size-fits-all treated leather glove that can be worn over/under most clothing. The glove can be worn on either the left or right hand by flipping the logo to the other side. Place the fishing pole into the sleeve of the glove for added stability.

Free fishing days are coming up on June 6 and 7. Free fishing days allow anyone to fish in Oklahoma without a state license. A free paddlefish permit is still required, and some city permits may be required as well.
