What a gift to hear from the culture legend himself on his career as a multifaceted artist and trailblazing creative at last night! In his conversation with , he talked all about his origin story and how he was able to soak up different mediums of art and launch a cultural movement.
He didn’t just host Yo! Raps as a first, he accomplished so much more than we realized: from creating Wild Style which showcased the first time we ever saw hip-hop, breakdancing, graffiti art and DJing in a movie, to directing videos for greats like and … just dope.
When I asked him how he was able to leverage his master lens in his career as a multitalented creative, he said he chose one thing to double down on at a time. Without a doubt, his broad lens of the creative and world at large gave him the ability to apply it where necessary while staying true to himself. Took that wisdom as a “multi-hyphenate creative” too.
Not to mention… we have the same birthday. 😉 There’s so much more I left inspired by. You can read more about it in his recently published memoir, “Everybody’s Fly: The Life of Art, Music, and Changing the Culture.”
