If you are researching assisted living costs or how to pay for senior care, this is the first exercise I would do:

Start by comparing it to what your parent is already paying for:

Housing.
Utilities.
Groceries.
Transportation.
Home maintenance.
Housekeeping.
Plus any extra help you are already paying for.

Then look at what costs would change after a move and what other financial resources may apply.

One number I want families to know before comparing senior living communities is their comfortable monthly range.

Not the absolute most you could possibly spend 💸

The amount that makes sense when you consider what is coming in each month, what expenses may change after the move, and how long the plan needs to work.

Then, when you talk with a community, ask for the numbers you actually need:

➡️ What is included in the monthly rate?
➡️ Which services cost extra?
➡️ How are additional care needs priced?
➡️ Are there one time fees at move in?
➡️ What could cause the monthly cost to change later?

That gives you something much more useful than simply asking, “How much is assisted living?”

If you are comparing assisted living costs, memory care costs, or trying to understand how to pay for senior living, save these questions. They can help you compare the real monthly picture instead of just the number at the top of a brochure.

Before you put your phone number or email into a senior living website, I would ask one simple question:

What happens to my contact information after I hit submit?

A few things are worth thinking through.

• Who will receive it?
• Will communities start calling me directly?
• Do I get to decide which communities hear from me?
• Am I talking with one person who knows my situation, or starting over every time I talk with someone?
• Who is helping me decide which options are actually worth looking at, instead of trying to sell me on a certain community?

Those questions matter when you are looking for senior living search help or comparing senior placement services.

One of my favorite things to do is getting out into the community and meeting families BEFORE they have to make a big decision.

I recently spent time at the Hands On Health event at The Chapel Akron , sharing senior living resources and answering questions about care options, planning ahead, and what families should do before they're in the middle of a crisis.

These conversations are a good reminder that people are often not looking for a sales pitch. They are looking for someone who can answer a question clearly, point them toward the right resource, or help them understand what options make the most sense for their family.

That is a big part of why I love being active in the community and building relationships with other local professionals who support seniors and caregivers. Special shout-out to local SRES Realtor Tina White Real Estate Agent for the event collaboration!

You can respect that wish and still ask some hard questions.

Is Mom taking her medications correctly?
Is Dad eating real meals when no one is there?
Has there been a fall, a near fall, or a change in walking?

And just as important:
What is it taking from the caregiver to keep everything going?

Missing work. Not sleeping because the phone might ring. Driving back and forth several times a week. Handling all of the meals, medications, appointments, laundry, groceries, and emergencies..

If Medicaid is part of your plan for assisted living, I would not stop at asking, “Do you accept it?”

I would also ask:

➡️ Is there a waiting period or other requirement before it can be used here?
➡️ Are there only a certain number of spots available?
➡️ What portion of the monthly bill would still be our responsibility?
➡️ Could that change if my parent needs more care later?
➡️ Who should we speak with to confirm eligibility before making a decision?

That is the kind of information families need when they are comparing assisted living costs and trying to understand how senior living gets paid for.

And if two people have given you two completely different answers, that is worth asking about too.

Why do I start with care needs instead of a list of communities?

Because I came to this work as a social worker first.

My years in hospice and home health taught me that two people the same age can need very different kinds of support. And when my own family needed help, I experienced how overwhelming it can be to figure out where to begin.

That's a big part of why I started Assisted Living Navigators and why I approach this work the way I do today.

➡️ Before we talk about communities, I want to understand the person.

What does Mom need help with today? What is Dad still doing independently? What concerns are keeping the family up at night? What can they afford? What would make daily life safer or easier?

Then we can start looking at options.

Because this has never been about giving families a list of places. It’s about helping them understand what their loved one needs first.

Stop asking “Do you have nurses?” and DO THIS instead 👇

Step 1) Before touring assisted living, write down everything you currently do for Mom or Dad:

Medications. Meals. Showers. Appointments. Laundry. Reminders. Getting in and out of bed safely. EVERYTHING.

Step 2) Then use that list to get more specific about the care they may receive:

☑️ What happens if Mom needs medical help at 2 a.m.?
☑️ Who manages medications when something changes?
☑️ Who responds after a fall or with a new health concern?
☑️ What happens when your parent needs more help than they do today?

A “yes, we have nurses” doesn’t answer those questions.

When a family comes to me, finding the right senior living community may be part of what they need, but it’s rarely the only thing they’re trying to figure out.

They may need to understand what level of care Mom needs, what they can realistically afford, whether there are benefits or resources available, or how they’re going to handle the home, downsizing, moving, and everything else that comes with a transition.

➡️ That’s why I always say we are so much more than a placement agency.

I want families to have good information, understand all of their options, and have trusted resources to turn to for the pieces of a transition that I don’t personally handle.

It truly is an honor when a family chooses us to help with such an important decision, and I never take that trust lightly.

I had a great time at the Hands on Health event at The Chapel Akron, talking with seniors and caregivers about the questions that often come up when planning for a move.

Where do we start with assisted living? What senior living options are available? Who can help with downsizing or selling a parent’s home?

These are all common questions, and having the right local resources can help families understand each part of the process. I enjoyed spending time with Tina White Real Estate Agent, a local Seniors Real Estate Specialist, and connecting with others who serve older adults in our community.
