Have you ever heard of “eating in season”?
What does that mean?
———————
Eating in season means grabbing freshly harvested, locally grown food while it's available this time of year.
In the Fall, local farms will have Pumpkin, squash, Kale Apples, eggplant, and more available . Fruit and vegetables are typically cheaper when they are season.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping for your produce this fall season-
All kinds of squash are easily found this time of the year. The most popular found are butternut squash, spaghetti squash, and acorn squash.
Squash contains high amounts of antioxidants which are responsible for protecting our cells and may reduce the risk of many diseases.
They are also high in calcium. Eating foods high in calcium is great for bone health.
Squash is also high in iron. Many people are iron deficient and they don’t even know it! Increasing iron intake, especially during menstruation can reduce fatigue during this time of year.
Next time you see squash at the store, remember these few health tips and the benefits that squash has to offer!
Carrots are in season all year long however they seem to taste their sweetest during the cooler months. This is due to the cold air and cool soil that converts the starches to sugars in root vegetables such as carrots.
Carrots are helpful to women's hormones because when consumed, the fiber binds to any excess estrogen and helps eliminate it from the body.
Excess estrogen in the body could lead to hormonal imbalances.
When the body is experiencing hormonal imbalances you could have symptoms such as PMS, acne, and mood swings. Adding carrots to your diet could help remove excess estrogen.
Carrots can be steamed, eaten raw, roasted, added to salads, or made as a side dish. The options to eat them are endless!
