Being familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel can help you recognize changes that should be evaluated.

1. Look for changes in size, shape, or skin texture.
2. Feel for a new lump or area of thickening.
3. Notice changes such as ni**le discharge, inversion, redness, swelling, or dimpling.

Not every breast change is cancer, but a new or unusual change should not be ignored. Regular breast cancer screening is also an important part of early detection.

Breast reconstruction comes with a lot of questions. So this October, Dr. Xu is answering some of the most common ones in our four-part series, "Conversations with Dr. Xu: Reconstruction after Mastectomy."

We’re starting with three big questions: breast implants and breast cancer risk, insurance coverage, and the two main approaches to reconstruction.

First up: breast implants and breast cancer. According to Susan G. Komen, "neither saline nor silicone breast implants are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. A meta-analysis of 10 studies found no increased risk among women with either type of implant."

And there’s still a lot more to cover. Come back next week for Parts 2–4 as Dr. Xu answers more questions about reconstruction after mastectomy.
