DAY 3: THE LARGE INTESTINE DOES MORE THAN HOLD WASTE

By the time food reaches the large intestine, most nutrients have already been absorbed by the small intestine. But the large intestine still has important work to do.

It receives water, fiber, minerals, bacteria, and material the body did not digest. It absorbs water and electrolytes, helps form stool, houses a large community of microorganisms, and moves waste toward elimination.

Gut bacteria also ferment certain fibers and create short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate. These compounds help nourish the cells lining the colon and participate in several important processes throughout the body.

Healthy elimination depends on more than simply eating fiber. The body also needs appropriate hydration, movement, nervous-system regulation, intestinal motility, and coordination among the abdominal muscles, re**um, a**l sphincters, and pelvic floor. Your large intestine is not just a storage container. It is a living and active part of your health.

Let me hear from you!

DAY 2: THE SMALL INTESTINE IS WHERE SO MUCH HAPPENS

I know we call the small intestine “small,” but it is about 20 feet long in an adult. This is where most digestion and nutrient absorption take place. Isn't that amazing?

This is how it works - food enters the small intestine after being partially broken down in the stomach. Digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile made by the liver help break carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller parts the body can use ... then ...

Did you know that the inner surface of the small intestine contains millions of tiny fingerlike structures called villi, with even smaller microvilli covering them? These structures create an enormous surface area for absorbing nutrients into the blood and lymphatic system.

I know we can eat beautiful, nutrient-dense food, but our bodies must still digest it, absorb it, transport it, and use it. Nutrition is not only about what goes into your mouth. It is also about what your body can actually receive.

I believe in you! Let me hear from you!

DAY 1: YOUR GUT IS MORE THAN YOUR STOMACH

Dr Kami here and today we are all about gut health - an entire system. Your mouth, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, gut bacteria, abdominal muscles, diaphragm, and pelvic floor all work together. When is the last time you thought about how your body is connected so deeply and intentionally?

Your digestive system breaks food down and then it releases nutrients from it. Then, those nutrients are absorbed and waste moves through your body to eliminate what you no longer need. If one part of your digestive process is struggling, you can notice bloating, gas, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, low energy, changes in appetite, or other changes in how you feel after eating.

You are not chasing on symptom and supporting your gut from it. Instead, you are helping the entire digestive process work as a unit through food nourishment, water, movement, sleep, stress support, sleep and basically paying attention to what your body is saying.

Thinking of you - I believe in you!

YOUR GUT SPEAKS. ARE YOU LISTENING?

Hi there! Dr Kami here and I'm thinking about the gut and how it does so much more than simply digest food. It breaks food down, absorbs nutrients, supports elimination, communicates with your nervous system and literally is talking to you and giving us all information every single day!

Over the next 10 days, we will talk about the small intestine, large intestine, nutrient absorption, healthy elimination, strengthening your core, listening to the ways your body speaks, the importance of good fats, and what the beautiful colors in vegetables may tell us about the nutrients and natural plant compounds they contain.

I have gathered this information in this series from published scientific research and trusted educational sources, including the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Institutes of Health, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Nutrition Source, and peer-reviewed research available through the National Library of Medicine.

My hope is you will be encouraged and you will become more aware of your body, more curious about any symptoms you have and more intentional about supporting your gut on a daily basis. So, my question is:

What has your gut been trying to tell you? I would love to hear from you!

I believe in you!

SELF CARE 10 OF 10: YOU DESERVE YOU

Maybe this entire conversation about self care really comes down to one thing.

Stop abandoning yourself.

Stop talking yourself out of what you know.

Stop ignoring your body.

Stop silencing your feelings because somebody else might be uncomfortable.

Stop waiting for permission.

Stop believing everyone else deserves your tenderness while you only deserve your criticism.

You deserve you.

Not some future version of you who finally loses the weight.

Not the woman who finally has enough money.

Not the woman who finally gets organized.

Not the woman whose marriage is perfect.

Not the woman who finally figures everything out.

You.

Today.

You are worthy of your own attention today.

You are worthy of nourishment today.

You are worthy of rest today.

You are worthy of boundaries today.

You are worthy of joy today.

You are worthy of spiritual connection today.

You are worthy of caring for the life you have while you are still becoming.

That does not mean you stop growing.

Quite the opposite.

There is a tremendous difference between changing because you hate yourself and changing because you love yourself enough to want something better.

One creates punishment.

The other creates transformation.

So perhaps self care is not really about pampering yourself.

Maybe it is about becoming someone who refuses to abandon herself anymore.

Someone who listens.

Someone who responds.

Someone who chooses what brings life.

Someone who knows that caring for herself is part of how she becomes strong enough to love other people well too.

Choose yourself.

Not instead of everyone else.

Alongside everyone else.

And keep choosing yourself.

Every single day.

Dr. Kami - I choose you! You choose you too!

SELF CARE 9 OF 10: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORT

You were never meant to do everything alone.

There is strength in independence.

But there is also strength in knowing when you need people.

One of the greatest indicators of how your life feels is often the people surrounding you.

Do they celebrate your growth?

Do they tell you the truth?

Do they want you healthy?

Do they want you strong?

Can you be yourself around them?

Can you speak honestly?

Do they encourage you to become more of who you are?

Or are you constantly managing the relationship?

Some relationships nourish you.

Some deplete you.

Some challenge you in healthy ways.

Some keep you small.

And this does not mean you discard people every time relationships become uncomfortable.

Real relationships require grace.

Patience.

Forgiveness.

Honesty.

Repair.

But pay attention to patterns.

You deserve relationships where there is reciprocity.

Where you are not always the strong one.

Where somebody asks how you are and actually waits for the answer.

Where you can laugh until your stomach hurts.

Where someone reminds you who you are when you forget.

Build that kind of community.

And be that kind of friend too.

You do not need twenty people.

You need real people.

Choose relationships that call life forward in you.

SELF CARE 8 OF 10: DO WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP

When did you stop playing?

Seriously.

When did everything become so responsible?

Bills.

Appointments.

Work.

Family.

Deadlines.

Health.

Chores.

Responsibilities.

Somewhere along the way, many adults stopped doing things simply because they enjoy them.

Everything has to have a purpose.

Everything has to be productive.

Everything has to make money.

Everything has to improve something.

But joy does something important too.

Painting matters.

Gardening matters.

Music matters.

Cooking something beautiful matters.

Travel matters.

Dancing badly in your kitchen matters.

Taking pictures matters.

Learning something completely unnecessary matters.

Laughing matters.

Joy is not frivolous.

Joy reminds you that you are alive.

And maybe there are parts of you that have been waiting patiently for you to come back.

The creative part.

The adventurous part.

The silly part.

The curious part.

The woman who used to dream about things before life became so serious.

Go find her.

Not because you are trying to become who you used to be.

You are not supposed to go backward.

But perhaps there are pieces of yourself you left behind that deserve to come forward with you.

Do something this week simply because it makes you happy.

No explanation required.

SELF CARE 7 OF 10: FILL YOUR CUP SPIRITUALLY

There are places inside you that success cannot fill.

Money cannot fill them.

Recognition cannot fill them.

Relationships cannot completely fill them.

Looking younger cannot fill them.

Achievement cannot fill them.

There is a spiritual part of you that was created for connection with God.

And when you neglect that part of yourself, you can have a very full life and still feel strangely empty.

Sometimes self care means turning your attention away from everything demanding something from you and remembering whose you are.

Sit still..

Talk to God. Talk to yourself. Listen. .

Read.

Do not make it complicated.

You do not need a perfect prayer.

You do not need the right atmosphere.

You do not need to perform spirituality.

Come exactly as you are.

Angry.

Confused.

Grateful.

Afraid.

Excited.

Exhausted.

Bring all of you.

Sometimes women spend years trying to become enough for God when the invitation has always been relationship.

There is something powerful about allowing your spirit to settle into the reality that you are loved before you accomplish another thing.

You can work from love instead of working for love.

You can make decisions from connection instead of fear.

You can move through uncertainty knowing you are not alone.

Fill your cup spiritually.

Because when your spirit is nourished, you begin showing up differently everywhere else.

Let's get spiritual!

SELF CARE 6 OF 10: QUIET YOUR MIND

You cannot hear yourself clearly when everything inside you is loud.

And a lot of us live loud.

Not necessarily because the room is noisy.

Our minds are noisy.

What if this happens?

What if they think that?

What should I do?

Did I make the right decision?

Why did she say that?

What if I fail?

What if I succeed?

What if I choose the wrong thing?

Overthinking can feel productive because your brain is busy.

But busy does not necessarily mean clear.

Sometimes you do not need another answer.

You need space.

Space between the thought and your response.

Space between somebody else's opinion and your decision.

Space between fear and truth.

This is why quiet matters.

Journal.

Think. Pray. Meditate. Get Still.

Sit without your phone.

Take a slow walk.

Breathe.

Turn off the television.

Drive without filling every second with noise.

Ask yourself what you actually think before asking ten other people what they think.

Sometimes clarity does not arrive because we are trying too hard to manufacture it.

It arrives when we become still enough to notice what has already been there.

You may be surprised at how much wisdom you have ignored because fear was louder.

You do not need to solve your entire life today.

Get quiet enough to hear the next thing.

Then do that.

I will meet you in the quiet

SELF CARE 5 OF 10: MOVE YOUR BODY, ELEVATE YOUR MOOD

There is something incredibly powerful about realizing your body can become stronger.

At any age.

Not overnight.

Not without effort.

But stronger.

Maybe there was a time when movement was simply something you did.

You ran around.

You climbed stairs.

You lifted things.

You got up off the floor without thinking about it.

And then life happened.

Work.

Children.

Stress.

Hormonal changes.

Illness.

Injury.

Grief.

Age.

Fatigue.

And suddenly strength is no longer something you can take for granted.

That is exactly why movement becomes such an important form of self care.

Not because you need to punish your body into becoming smaller.

Because strength gives you options.

Strength helps you remain independent.

Strength helps you carry groceries.

Get out of a chair.

Travel.

Play with grandchildren.

Lift your suitcase.

Recover more effectively when life knocks you down.

And yes, movement can change your mood.

Sometimes the very thing you do not feel like doing is the thing that shifts the way you feel afterward.

You do not have to start with an hour.

Start with ten minutes.

Walk.

Lift light weights.

Stretch.

Ride a bicycle.

Take a class.

Dance.

Do something that challenges you just enough to remind your body, “We are still here. We are still growing.”

Do not wait until you feel motivated.

Motivation often shows up after movement begins.

And stop comparing what you can do today with what you could do twenty years ago.

This is not about proving anything.

This is about becoming stronger for the life you still want to live.

I believe in you! Do you believe in you?
