I learned a long time ago that if I was to blame my father for all my faults, I had to effectively blame him for all my strengths too.
He was never the affectionate, supportive father I craved. He didn’t know how to be that way. He was critical, tougher than nails, often mean and crass, but I always wanted a relationship with him, because we only get one father and I value family above all else.
I worked hard to be able to do have a relationship with him and I’m glad I did because he has been the biggest catalyst for growth in my entire life.
He’s taught me a lot about the kind of person I want to be and also the kind I never want to be.
We’ve had our share of ups and downs together and now he’s coming to the end of his life and seeing him navigate that is still teaching me so much.
We always get to choose how we respond to what life brings us and because of this man I’ve always chosen to respond by being better. Learning, growing and doing whatever it takes to succeed.
Nomatter what life throws at you, good or bad, you get to choose how it will shape you. Some times it’s harder than other times, but the moment you give up, you loose the chance to see how much better you can be.
Don’t give up on yourself! You’re worth it all!
