Can’t walk far without pain? Your nerves may simply need more space. The MILD procedure, or Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression, is designed for certain patients with lumbar spinal stenosis who experience pain, heaviness, numbness, or weakness when standing or walking. The goal is to create more room around compressed nerves and help improve mobility without traditional open spine surgery. 1. Creates More Space Around the Nerves. MILD removes small portions of thickened ligament that may be contributing to narrowing in the spinal canal, helping create more room for the nerves. 2. May Help You Walk Farther By reducing pressure around the nerves, some patients may be able to stand or walk for longer periods with less discomfort. 3. Minimally Invasive The procedure is performed through a very small access point and does not require the same type of large incision associated with traditional spine surgery. 4. No Implant Left Behind Unlike some other procedures, MILD does not involve placing a permanent implant in the spine. 5. Designed to Improve Daily Function For the right patient, reducing nerve compression may make everyday activities like walking through the store, standing, or spending time with family more manageable. If spinal stenosis is limiting how far you can walk or how long you can stand, the MILD procedure may be an option worth discussing with a pain specialist to see if you’re a candidate.

Do you notice your back or leg pain gets worse the longer you stand or walk? 👀

Lumbar spinal stenosis can narrow the space around the nerves in your lower back, sometimes causing pain, heaviness, numbness, or weakness with activity.

The MILD procedure (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) is designed to remove a small amount of excess ligament tissue and create more room within the spinal canal.

A spinal cord stimulator trial gives patients the opportunity to test the therapy before deciding whether a permanent implant may be right for them. Dr. Malayil walks through the procedure and shows how this temporary trial is performed. ⚡️
