Back to sleep causes tummy time to be less frequent than when I raised my children. Early 1990s.
Some babies really don’t get completely horizontal flat on their tummies much.
Turning of the head when awake and alert for equal time resting on both sides is telling….(the original video is much longer and baby could rest for minutes on either side.)
What does the above tell us? It tells us that FULL neck range of motion is equal TO BOTH SIDES.
Turning against a floor surface pushes baby to go further in range of motion than does visually tracking in a rainbow arch on their back. If they are tight, (on one side or both) they will not turn and rest head down for long periods of time. (Done but not seen on the video) you may see where they can stay for as long as they want on one side but not the other.
Here’s the reason it’s top tummy time tip… having equal & full neck rotation to both sides, means when baby IS on back, they are turning equally & fully to both sides, molding and shaping (even when on their back.) Much like we do when we roll a ball of play dough on a firm surface.
