Great to see the benefits of internal martial arts and qigong finally recognized by the west!

Taiji (Tai chi), which the article focuses on, is one of China’s three main internal martial arts. I practice this, but don’t teach it. I do teach another internal martial art, Baguazhang, and of course, qigong!!

There’s loads of good info in the article, which I’ve included below 👇. I didn’t know, for example, that low back pain is the leading cause of disability in 160 countries!

From the Guardian: 👍😊

Traditional Chinese exercises such as tai chi can offer wide-ranging benefits for people with musculoskeletal disorders, improving physical function, pain, mental health, sleep quality and bone mineral density, according to the largest review of its kind.

More than 1.7bn people have musculoskeletal conditions worldwide. While prevalence varies by age and diagnosis, people of all ages in every country and every continent are affected.

Musculoskeletal conditions significantly limit mobility and dexterity, leading to early retirement from work, lower levels of wellbeing and reduced ability to participate in society. They are also the leading contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability in 160 countries.

There was already evidence indicating traditional Chinese exercises were associated with beneficial health outcomes in people with musculoskeletal disorders, but much of it was fragmented and contained inconsistencies.

The overarching review of pooled data analyses of systematic reviews by researchers at hospitals and universities in China, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, drew on 92 data syntheses from 1,744 randomised controlled clinical trials.

It found “high certainty evidence” for the effectiveness of traditional Chinese exercise – such as tai chi, qigong, baduanjin, wuqinxi and yijinjing – for a range of health outcomes for people with musculoskeletal disorders.

These included improving movement in knee osteoarthritis, mental health associated with neck pain and knee osteoarthritis, and sleep quality associated with fibromyalgia.

Tai chi, in particular, significantly eased chronic musculoskeletal pain and stiffness in several conditions while increasing bone mineral density in participants with osteopenia or osteoporosis, the research found.

Maximum benefits were achieved when people did these exercises for longer than six months, at least three times a week, clocking up a total of at least 150 minutes a week.

“This comprehensive [umbrella review] provides a definitive, high-level evidence synthesis supporting [traditional Chinese exercises] as effective interventions for a range of musculoskeletal conditions],” the researchers concluded.

“The evidence, particularly for tai chi, reaches high certainty for improving key outcomes such as physical function in knee osteoarthritis, mental health in neck pain, sleep in fibromyalgia and bone density in osteoporosis.”

The findings suggested traditional Chinese exercises should be included in clinical guidelines and rehabilitation programmes worldwide, the researchers added.

“[These] exercises represent a safe, accessible, and cost-effective strategy that can complement conventional therapies, reduce pharmacological reliance, and empower patients in self-management.”

While the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions increases with age, younger people are also affected, often during their peak income-earning years.

And with global population growth and ageing, the number of people living with musculoskeletal conditions and associated health problems is rapidly increasing.

“For healthcare systems and policymakers, promoting the adoption of traditional Chinese exercises, particularly in community and primary care settings, could be a strategic component of public health initiatives aimed at healthy ageing and chronic disease prevention,” the researchers said.

When you or a loved one have cancer or have been through treatment, you/they could stick with your usual personal trainer or maybe go with that sweet well intentioned recently certified college athlete at the gym who probably has never worked a day in his or her life in an actual healthcare setting and probably doesn't have much experience with even their own health issues. And you just might be okay, Or not. Or you/they could find someone like me, over 25 years working in hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, home health, and outpatient centers. Someone who is not just a fitness professional but an actual healthcare professional; someone who has multiple certifications in cancer exercise; someone who has a business specifically devoted to those on the cancer journey; someone who has countless connections in the local and national cancer community; someone who is middle aged and has had his own list of health problems and spent many nights in hospital beds receiving his own treatment. And I travel to your home so you don't have to incur more travel while you struggle through so many other challenges. You see, "a generic workout plan isn't just ineffective for cancer survivors. It can be dangerous. Surgery alters structural integrity. Chemotherapy affects the heart, nerves, and muscles. Radiation hardens tissue and restricts mobility. And yet, most fitness programs treat post-cancer bodies exactly the same as everyone else's.That gap between what cancer survivors need and what they're actually getting? It's costing them their recovery." Read on...then message or call me, because at this point in life, you or your loved one need and deserve more than generic. https://strongerbydesign.substack.com/p/cookie-cutter-fitness-has-no-place?r=2msg06&utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web&utm_id=97757_v0_s00_e233_tv2_tp1_a1dennhb6z57a6&fbclid=IwY2xjawSMO6FleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEe8rPXj672EBqKbHK1MjZHSkNUqWJrx2IJcAXwhHLdGjOTww51NowKsBrGdlM_aem_GP5pNu6mbCEl0yWSsUDzpA&triedRedirect=true

Lymphedema. Cancer's dirty little secret that your oncologist probably didn't tell you much about, if at all. The right kind of exercise under the guidance of a CETI certified trainer can be of tremendous help in managing and decreasing it. Message me and let's get it done.

If you or your client/patient has had lymph nodes removed or irradiated during cancer treatment, it is essential to perform lymphatic drainage exercises to open up lymphatic pathways and improve lymphatic flow to avoid lymphedema.

Lymphedema is swelling that generally occurs in an arm or leg, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and ge****ls. The condition is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system, part of the immune and circulatory systems. Lymphedema is most commonly caused by lymph node removal or damage due to cancer treatment.

As a CETI OncoVie® Cancer Exercise Specialist you will learn all about lymphedema and lymphatic drainage exercises as part of our extensive curriculum.
