Overcoming stress with counseling in 2023

Researchers in a 2002 study categorized stressful events by asking participants to rate stressful life events by taking a daily inventory of stressful events. The study included 1,031 participants; ages crossed the lifespan from 25-year-olds to 74 -year-olds. A group may vary in types of stress in the general population, but the study listed the following stress categories.

• Arguments/tension
• Work/school stressors
• Home stressors
• Health care concerns
• Financial concerns

It seems stress factors in 2023 are no different from 2002, but the “good news out of all this” shows how counseling helps. In fact, Dan Siegel’s research in IPNB (interpersonal neurobiology) shows how those in counseling develop empathy, gain emotional regulation, and can overcome stressors through the counseling relationship by regulation of the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical) axis in the brain. The HPA axis has a direct influence on cortisol, a hormone related to stress.

Postpartum Depression

Laura Richards in an article on The Healthy: A Reader’s Digest Brand, highlights postpartum depression myths.

• Postpartum depression is just like typical depression. No, it’s not.
• Postpartum depression is a visible condition. No, you may appear to have it together.
• Postpartum depression causes women to hurt their babies. No, a desire to hurt your baby indicates postpartum psychosis.
• Postpartum depression occurs shortly after giving birth. No, it is more severe and may last up to a year.
• Postpartum depression means that a woman doesn’t love her baby. Not true, the condition may be caused by psychological, hormonal, or biological factors.
• Postpartum depression will resolve on its own time. Don’t let this issue linger; seek out help immediately!

There’s a lot of misinformation about postpartum depression (PPD) and what it means for new moms. Here’s what you need to know.

Understanding Depression

Almost 7% of the population or 16 million adults in the United States suffer with depression every year. Depression symptoms vary; it effects both men and women. Research shows that depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States between the ages of 15 - 44. Symptoms for major depression include five or more of the following:

• Depressed mood for most of the day, nearly every day
• Feelings of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness.
• Diminished pleasure or interest in all or almost all activities most of the day, nearly every day.
• Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain.
• Trouble falling asleep or excessive day time sleepiness nearly every day.
• Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day.
• Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt.
• Diminished ability to think or concentrate, indecisiveness nearly every day.
• Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation
• Symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social settings, in the workplace, or other important areas.

Making Restitution – Apologizing is Powerful

Apologizing is powerful and restorative. Authors Gary Chapman and Jennifer Thomas, “When Sorry Isn’t Enough” share five ways for people to apologize effectively. Does your apology communicate restitution? Restitution means redeeming something lost or stolen to the proper owner, compensating the injury or loss with a financial payment or restoring to its original shape. A broken heart may need restitution to fix the relationship. The authors share these statements from those with broken hearts:

• “I expect him to try to repair what has gone wrong.”
• “I expect her to be truly sorry from the heart and be willing to make things right.”

But, how might you ask., “It seems impossible, because he doesn’t listen.”, or “She avoids the issue.” Chapman and Thomas apply emotional love languages to the process of restoring a relationship. It’s not about meeting your need but recognizing your spouse’s language for love.

• Acts of Service
• Receiving Gifts
• Quality Time
• Physical Touch

There’s an art to maintaining a healthy and loving relationship. I encourage you to read a book together, attend a relationship conference, or seek out couple’s counseling. Men if you’re not convinced, think about it as car maintenance. What happens if you don’t keep the right amount of oil in an engine? It degrades the life of the engine. What happens if there is no oil? It locks up the engine, leaving internal damage and possibly thousands of dollars in repairs. Service your relationship, before the internal damage leads to a break-up of the family.
