🚫 MYTH BUSTER MONDAY: "My thyroid is the reason I can't lose weight."
❌ Myth... but with an important caveat.
An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can contribute to weight gain and make weight loss more challenging—but it's rarely the only reason someone struggles with their weight.
For most people with hypothyroidism:
🦋 Treating the thyroid usually results in only modest weight loss, often because much of the initial weight gain is due to fluid retention.
🦋 Once thyroid hormone levels are back to normal, weight loss still depends on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, medications, muscle mass, and overall health.
If you're doing everything right and still struggling, don't assume it's "just your thyroid."
A thorough evaluation should also consider:
✔️ Thyroid function
✔️ Insulin resistance or prediabetes
✔️ Sleep apnea
✔️ Medications
✔️ Hormones
✔️ Nutrition and protein intake
✔️ Activity level and muscle mass
The answer isn't always to increase thyroid medication—it may be identifying the real barriers keeping you from reaching your goals.
💬 If you've been told, "It's just your thyroid," but you're still struggling, talk with your healthcare provider. Weight management is complex, and you deserve an evaluation that looks at the whole picture.
