The Skirboll Autism and Intellectual and Developmental Disability Conference this year is on October 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, from 2 pm to 4:30 pm. On October 21st, the conference will cover Feeding, Sleeping, and Toileting in Session 1 and School Advocacy and Effective Communication in Session 2. On October 22nd, Session 1 will cover End-of-Life Care and Future Planning, and Session 2 will cover Understanding Trauma in IDD. The last day, October 23rd, Session 1 will cover Transitions to High School and College, and Session 2 will cover Inclusive Recreation across the Life Course. According to the ADA, service dogs are any breed and any size that are trained to perform a task directly related to a person's disability. Service animals are not required to be certified or go through a professional training program, and they are not required to wear a vest or other ID. They are allowed to go in restaurants, shops, hospitals, schools, and hotels. There are different rules that apply to private and public housing. Did you know that September is National Service Dog Awareness Month? Service dogs are trained to assist with everyday tasks to increase independence for their owners who have a disability. Some tasks may include pulling wheelchairs, picking up dropped items, alerting to sounds and blood sugar levels, and much more.

There is a common misconception that emotional support dogs and service dogs are the same. A Service dog is a dog that's been individually trained to perform tasks or work to assist a person with a disability. Emotional support or comfort isn't a task related to a person's disability, so they are considered pets. To learn more, click the link:

Dick and Rick Hoyt were a father-and-son running duo. Rick was the wheelchair user, and he wanted to run a 5-mile benefit race in honor of a classmate who had recently been paralyzed. He loved it so much that the father-and-son duo continued to compete in over 1,000 races. These races included Ironmans, marathons, duathlons, and triathlons. September is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month. Su***de Prevention is relevant to everyone, including people with disabilities. This year's theme is "Changing the Narrative on Su***de." This is an opportunity to recognize and address suicidal actions and/or ideations regarding people with disabilities. People with disabilities often face social isolation, trauma, bullying, and more. They might have difficulty accessing the appropriate mental health services. Sometimes signs of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts may be overlooked because changes in mood or behavior are attributed to a person's disability. To learn more, click the link:
