Source Yoga Source Yoga is a place to simply be, to accept ourselves as we are in this moment, and connect with our innate wisdom.

Through the cultivation of present moment awareness through yoga and mindfulness practices, we discover and nurture our inner resources for self-care, ease, peace of mind, and compassion. Through integrity and healthy business practices, we create a safe foundation for all of us to learn, grow, teach, and lead from our heart.

Take a mindful pause.

Notice the support under you. Feel your breath. Let a hand rest wherever you feel your breath moving, and gently ask yourself:

How am I feeling right now?

Not how you should feel. Just what’s here. It might be a sensation (tight shoulders, a heavy chest, a buzzing in your belly) or a word like tires, hopeful, restless, tender, flat or somewhere in between. Two things can be true at once. “Overwhelmed and also grateful” counts.

One thing I’m grateful for today.

It can be small. The warmth of your tea in your mug. A text from a friend. Sunlight streaming through the window. A body that carries you through the day. Gratitude doesn’t have to be big to be real.

Am I being present in what I do?

Notice where your attention is right now. Are you washing dishes while overthinking the conversation or interaction you just had? Scrolling while your mind is elsewhere? No judgement. Noticing is the practice. Feel your feet, take one full breath, and come back to this moment.

What support can I offer myself?

Think of what you’d offer a friend. Maybe it’s a glass of water, a walk outside, a nap, a boundary, saying no is a complete sentence. Or reaching out to someone you trust for connection. Sometimes support is as simple as softening your jaw and saying, “I’m here.”

You are doing better than you may think you are.

Save this for moments you need a gentle check-in, and share with someone who could use a pause today.

“Mindfulness helps us get better at seeing the difference between what’s happening and the stories we tell ourselves about what’s happening, stories that get in the way of direct experience. Often such stories treat a fleeting state of mind as if it were our entire and permanent self.” — Sharon Salzberg, Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation

Maybe today there’s a feeling moving through you. Tired, tender, restless, scattered. And maybe a story arrives right behind it: this is just how I am.

You’re invited to notice the feeling and the story as two separate things. The feeling is real, and it’s allowed. The story is optional.

Maybe take a moment on your mat, or in a your chair, or wherever you are, you might try:

* Taking one slow breath and ask, what is actually here right now?

* Notice the sensations first: warmth, tightness, ease, buzzing.

* Can you let the story soften, even a little?

A passing weather system isn’t the whole sky.

Gratitude and Third Spaces

This summer marked 21 year since Source Yoga first opened its door, a dream our founder Erin Joosse held for five years before it became real.

In Erin’s words:

“It hasn’t always been easy(easy wouldn’t be anyone’s description of a running a small business), but I am often returned to returned to gratitude — for the people, for teaching, for the connections and community that is so clearly evident in the walls of the studio, for the regular communications from community members of how meaningful source is to them.

I think Source has become one of those ‘third spaces’ you hear talked about….”

Read the full message from Erin in our monthly newsletter, which just landed in inboxes. Not on our email list yet? Sign up at the link in our bio for special offerings, series and workshops along with thoughtful notes from Erin and the Source Yoga community.”

“Sometimes we need to be angry in order to have courage to confront those threatening or disrespecting us. If we don’t get angry, we’ll be much less likely to stand up for ourselves. Because anger energizes us and focuses us on the threat at hand, it equips us to take self-protective action.” — Dr. Kristin Neff, Fierce Self-Compassion

Tender compassion says, “I’m here with you.”
Fierce compassion says, “And I won’t let you be harmed.”
We need both.

On the mat, that might look like resting in child’s pose, or saying no to a shape that doesn’t serve your body. Off the mat, it’s setting a boundary with care and clarity.

🤍 Can you be tender with yourself while practicing fierce compassion?

The longest running yoga studio in Tacoma just turned 21.

What makes a studio last two decades isn’t the walls. It’s the people who kept returning to them. Who made this a place to return to yourself, again and again.

To breathe, to move, to find presence, to unlearn, and relearn, together.

To every student who’s rolled out a mat here, every teacher who’s held space, and everyone who’s made this community what it is, thank you.

We’d love for you to share a favorite memory of your time here, whether you’re a new student or longtime one. 💙

Poem from Erin’s Thanksgiving class this morning:

Thank You
BY ROSS GAY
If you find yourself half naked
and barefoot in the frosty grass, hearing,
again, the earth's great, sonorous moan that says
you are the air of the now and gone, that says
all you love will turn to dust,
and will meet you there, do not
raise your fist. Do not raise
your small voice against it. And do not
take cover. Instead, curl your toes
into the grass, watch the cloud
ascending from your lips. Walk
through the garden's dormant splendor.
Say only, thank you.
Thank you.

A joyous Happy Birthday to Source teacher Rosie Townsend! If you have not experienced meeting Rosie in person, please do so!! She is truly the embodiment of sunlight as it shines down on this great green earth to kindly and encouragingly whisper, "grow! breathe! live!". Rosie seems to live life with unabashed joy, honesty, and ease. Her Thursday Gentle Yoga classes are a mid-week, mini-retreat for ALL who are fortunate to be in her care.
