Fun fact...well maybe not fun but, definitely good information. An epidural is NOT the only form of pain management during labor. One of the most effective ways to manage pain during labor is water! Getting in the tub or shower helps to relax muscles and reduce pain.
M O V E M E N T!!! Walking, swaying, dancing or birth ball are all highly effective ways to manage pain.
Whatever you choose, make sure it's what you WANT and not what you're talked into.
Remember: YOU are a beautiful manifestation of The Creator's handiwork 🤗 Tanisha Williams

A while ago I was asked, why do you want to be a doula? Initially, my answer was simple: I like to help and educate. However, very recently I have realized that being a doula isn't something I just WANT to do, it's what I am CALLED to do. For me, being a doula is a ministry. Anyone can do hip squeezes or coach you through a contraction and this work goes far beyond signed contracts or birthing jargon. I wipe tears and vomit, I uplift, encourage and pray. There are prenatal visits where I take off my doula hat, put down my notes and just listen. I listen to the first time mother who is terrified of the pain of labor or what her life will look like with a new baby. I reassure the mom expecting baby number three that she is powerful and help her to find her voice in the birthing space. I even change diapers and entertain older siblings. I'm not watching the clock because my contract says I only stay a certain amount of hours. I stay until you're safe and holding your baby. Yes, I was called to this sacred work and I am honored to do it. I have been trusted to be in such an intimate and transformative space with families and I don't take it lightly. My prayer is that The Creator will continue to give me the words and the wisdom for this work and strength for the journey.

💁🏽‍♀️What does research tell us about upright labor and birth?

According to the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, a respected international organization that defines best practices based on research, the use of any upright or side-lying position, compared with supine or lithotomy positions (lying on back, legs supported by stirrups), is associated with the following results:

✅shorter second stage of labor;

✅a small reduction in vacuum or forceps-assisted birth;

✅fewer episiotomies;

✅less chance that the woman will report severe pain;

✅fewer abnormal fetal heart rate patterns;

✅a small increase in second-degree lacerations (in the upright group only); and

✅an increase in estimated blood loss, although there was no evidence of serious or long-term problems from the extra blood loss (Gupta, Hofmeyr, & Smyth, 2004).

⬆️Upright and gravity-neutral positions are safe during pushing and are often more comfortable than lying on your back.

➡️Following your own urge to push is less stressful for your baby than directed pushing.

⬇️Pushing when and how your natural urge tells you to gives you the best chance of preventing tears and muscle weakness in your pelvis after the birth.

I want to take a moment to honor all of the Mothers, Mama's, Godmother's, Mother figures and the like. May The Creator continue to bless you, keep you and give you strength. It takes a special person to nurture, encourage, inspire, discipline and love little humans 24/7. You continue to love, guide and support those humans into adulthood. May this day be full of the joy, love and peace you deserve.

I love being a doula and everything that comes with it. There are long nights sitting in a chair watching a client FINALLY get some rest after an epidural, having my shoes splashed, and tears on my shirts. What I have learned, is there's so much more to it than that. Being a doula means SERVING and teaching families during the most transformative moments of their life. I teach my clients how to advocate for themselves and how to make sure their voice is heard in a world where they're told to lay on their backs and be silent. Yes, it's beautiful to see a newborn take their first breath but it's even more crucial to make sure that mom isn't taking her last breath. I actually heard someone say,"I didn't know that women are dying after birth, I thought it was only during." WE HAVE TO CHANGE THAT!!!
