History of AT Awareness Day

National Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Day was first recognized in 2024 to spotlight the essential role assistive technology plays in everyday life. It was established to recognize how technology supports people who have disabilities and older adults in living, learning, and working independently.

But the story of assistive technology goes much further back. From early tools like canes and wheelchairs to modern innovations like screen readers and smart prosthetics, assistive technology has evolved over centuries to help people navigate daily life with greater independence.

Assistive Technology (AT) isn’t just wheelchairs and screen readers. It also includes tools, devices, software, remote monitoring, and everyday technology such as smart home devices and wearables, that empower people of all ages and abilities to live, learn, work, and participate fully in every aspect of life.

Why do we say everyone? Every person on the planet will either need assistive technology for themselves or know someone who does. Most are using AT right now! Our goal is to build AT awareness now, so everyone knows about it before they need it, and NO ONE goes without!

This day is also a time to recognize and thank the assistive technology specialists, program coordinators, researchers, and professional organizations who work tirelessly to connect people with the right tools for their individual needs. Their dedication helps ensure that people who have disabilities and older adults can live with dignity, independence, and opportunity.
