Florida State University researchers at the FSU College of Medicine and the FAMU FSU College of Engineering will study how physical changes in cells contribute to the progression of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common type of pancreatic cancer and the third-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

The research, which is supported by a $2.8 million grant from the National Cancer Institute, will help scientists understand how the shape and organization of pancreatic cells change as the disease develops and whether these physical changes help tumors grow and spread to other parts of the body.

Weight stigma, or perceived unfair treatment based on body weight or size, has been linked to a range of health concerns, but less is known about how these experiences may affect cardiometabolic health in underrepresented populations in research.
A study by Associate Professor Mary A. Gerend and student Anna W. Lu (M.D. Class of 2028) examined the association between perceived weight stigma and cardiometabolic health in a demographically varied sample of 2,632 U.S. adults. Researchers examined whether smoking, alcohol use and sleep disturbance may help explain the relationship between weight stigma and cardiometabolic health.

Scheduled to open in Fall 2026, the new FSU Health Research and Collaboration Building will bring together researchers and clinicians to transform health and healthcare in the region.

Located on the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare - TMH campus, the 140,000-square foot building will include clinical research space, a family residency practice, laboratory facilities and other resources designed to bridge the gap between academic research and patient care.
