🇳🇴 Our First Day in Oslo! 🇳🇴

We dropped our bags at the hotel and, since it was too early to check in, set out to explore a little. Of course, we had to stop for gelato—it brought back sweet memories of our time in Italy! 🍦🇮🇹

We also stopped at the Oslo Cathedral built between 1694-1697, considered the most important cathedral in Norway. It features a baroque style with massive ceiling murals by Hugo Lou’s Morh and stained glass by Emanuel Vigeland. It is the primary venue for national and royal events. I lit a candle in honor of my Dad❤️

After checking in and getting settled, we walked to the stunning Oslo Opera House. Its unique architecture is designed to look like an iceberg rising from the fjord, and the building opened in 2008. ❄️

Next was the Munch Museum, where we saw Edvard Munch’s famous The Scream. The museum, which opened in 2018, rotates three versions of this iconic work so each can be carefully preserved. We also discovered several other paintings we really enjoyed. 🎨

We ended the day with dinner at Osteria Della Nonna, the restaurant in our hotel, followed by an early bedtime. A wonderful first day in Norway—and we’re just getting started! 🇳🇴❤️

Last night we hiked down to the Deck on the Joe Creek Trail, waiting for dark and letting our eyes adjust to view the Blue Ghost fireflies. We enjoying watching regular fireflies while we waited.

Blue Ghost fireflies (Phausis reticulata) are a tiny specialist of the moist Appalachian cove forests. Most people in the world will never see these species in the wild. We were fortunate to visit one of the few places on earth where they thrive.

The males are about the size of a grain of rice. They drift slowly 1-3 feet above the forest floor with a soft, continuous glow. Their light is actually green, but in the darkness your eyes perceive it as pale blue or icy white (a natural phenomenon called the Purkinje effect). Watching them is often described as seeing tiny lanterns floating through the trees.

The females are wingless and almost invisible. They glow low in the leaf little from several small light organs. The females are glowing quietly down in the leaves, waiting and choosing.

Males spend one to two years as larvae hidden in the soil before emerging as adults for just a few short weeks. Their entire adult life is devoted to finding a mate.

We crossed a bridge to follow Camp Trail to see one of the popular locations. It was a magical experience watching this unique mating ritual. We never saw any other people, and we were surrounded by soft blue lights dancing, listening to the nearby water….amazing! Our attempt at picture and video did not give them justice.

They came early this year, so we were so grateful to still get to see them. Tonight we will go to a different spot on the property where they have also been seen. Grateful that Tuxedo Falls respects these beautiful species on their property. The property is only open to guests staying in one of their seven glamping cabins. A true gem in North Carolina!

Loved our tour of The Turtle Hospital in the Florida Keys! The turtles that came in 2025 were named after a musical instrument! Such a fun, educational experience! Grateful there are places like this helping these precious turtles!!🐢

Grateful to end a productive, beautiful day with a walk. It felt wonderful getting returns done, toys put away and decluttering, plus much needed down time.😊
