Diet and fitness has always been an area of interest for me but it wasn't until my early twenties that I came to realize that those two areas are only a very SMALL part of overall health and that is where the Holistic comes in... aaand, that elusive thing called "balance". Have you ever heard someone say that “organic crops are grown without chemicals.” Well this is almost always untrue. The word “chemical” has been used in marketing for years to represent an unsafe but ambiguous substance. Technically, water is a chemical based on the scientific definition. So let’s be clear, organic crops are produced without the use of “toxic and synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, genetic engineering, antibiotics, synthetic growth hormones, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, sewage sludge and irradiation.” This means farmers still have many chemical options in their toolbox, but all of them are approved before use in organic agriculture so you can feel confident that your organic produce is safe to consume. That said, it is ALWAYS a good idea to wash your produce! 🍏🍉🍇🥦🫑🥔🌶️🫐🍓🍑🥭🍈

Did you know that the USDA organic regulations are about to be majorly updated for the first time in over 20 years? The National Organic Program (NOP) is the department within the USDA that writes the organic regulation. As the organic industry grew, regulators realized we needed to enhance regulations to reduce the risk of organic fraud. This rule update, known as Strengthening Organic Enforcement, is intended for just that! It goes into effect March 19th of 2024.

Ask your local organic farmers how they have been preparing for the SOE update!

Did you know Meacham Farm is one of the coolest local farms here in Tampa? Cause that's a fact! But really, we want to highlight this amazing farm and what they do in the Tampa community. We are grateful to be partnering with them and delivering their online orders! So here goes:

Meacham farm is a for-profit production farm as well as an educational non-profit entity that was started in 2020. The farm was established by 2 farmers, Travis Malloy and Joe Dalessio, in collaboration with the Tampa Housing Authority and Hillsborough County School District. This farm sits on 2-acres and produces over thirty varieties of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables that are available in the on-site Farm Store. The farm is managed with many of the sustainable agriculture practices we have been sharing about in our Fact Friday sustainable agriculture series. Their mission revolves around making high quality, nutrient-dense produce while educating the community of Tampa Bay! Check them out at meachamfarm.com

The last sustainable agriculture practice in this series is hydroponics, which is the practice of growing crops in water with added nutrients rather than in soil. Hydroponic production takes place indoors and is ideal for crop production in an urban area where space is limited. Hydroponic production allows for faster growing plants due to the high nutrient concentration, there are less pest and disease issues due to indoor production, and it actually requires less water than growing crops in the soil as the water is recycled in the production system. Hydroponics come with a higher up-front cost, but provide a great option for fresh local produce in urban areas!

Today we are discussing permaculture! Permaculture is the practice of designing agricultural systems to benefit the landscape and human population. The key is to plan out the agricultural land and community in a way that sustainably provides food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs. It requires observation of natural ecosystems and multi-faceted use of agricultural systems to create a natural environment that meets the community needs. This differs from previous systems we have discussed because it requires methodical planning and a community of people working on it together. Permaculture is a beautiful way to combine humans and nature💚

Biodynamic farming is the most hippie form of sustainable agriculture ✌️ Biodynamics is the holistic integration of many practices we have gone over, but with the added aspect of viewing each part of the farm (fields, livestock, plants, water sources, etc.) as parts of a living organism🌏. It integrates science 🧬🧪 and spirituality ✨ to create a natural resilient ecosystem. There are biodynamic certifications as well as many farms that simply adopt these practices.

The sustainable ag practice this week is Agroforestry! The name is somewhat self-explanatory, but it is the combination of agriculture and trees. It is a way of creating a more natural ecosystem and avoiding deforestation. Agroforestry can be applied:
🫒In fields - where trees and crops are grown together
🫒On farms - where trees may provide food for livestock, fuel, food, shelter or income from products including timber
🫒Landscapes - where agricultural and forest land uses combine to create natural ecosystems with more resilience to different climate stressors

So hug a tree and a beet this Friday!

On the sustainable ag list today is 🫒integrated pest management (IPM)🫒. Pests used to be dealt with by spraying harmful chemicals, but this new practice ✨integrates✨ biological, mechanical, cultural, and chemical practices to solve or manage pest issues. Some examples of this include:
Biological - introducing a natural predator of that pest to help control the pest population
Mechanical - rodent traps for rats/mice or sticky traps that collect flying insects
Cultural - changing irrigation schedule to disrupt pest lifecycle or planting more appealing crops close by to draw the pest away
Chemical - pesticides that are selective (won't hurt beneficial insects) and be the safest for air, soil, and water quality

These are just a few examples of what IPM can look like. Join us next week to learn about agroforestry in the sustainable agriculture setting!
