Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a woody, fan-shaped fungus often referred to as the “mushroom of immortality.” Reishi has a rich history going all the way back to ancient China, where it was so revered for its powers and rarity that only royalty could obtain it.
Across Asia it has various names—Lingzhi in China, Reishi in Japan, and Yeongji in Korea—which all translate to “spirit plant” or “divine mushroom.”
And oh, the lore! There’s the Taoist legend of Magu, an immortal fairy who brewed reishi w**e. Taoist art often shows immortal beings holding Reishi or riding on clouds shaped like the mushroom’s cap. Shen Nong, the mythical emperor and father of Chinese agriculture and herbal medicine, held Reishi (or Lingzhi) in such high esteem that it was placed at the very top of the superior herbs in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica), the oldest known book on Chinese herbal medicine.
Reishi offers an abundant source of beta-glucan, a soluble fiber (polysaccharide) which increases the vigilance of the immune system, making it one of our treasured Immune Guardians. 🛡️
