Another encouraging piece of research exploring the potential role of Reiki within supportive and integrative care. ❤️
A randomized controlled study published in EXPLORE examined whether Reiki could help reduce anxiety in mothers whose children were hospitalized, a population that can experience significant stress, fear and uncertainty while supporting a child through illness and hospital care.
The study included 120 mothers, who were randomly assigned to three groups:
• Reiki: 4 sessions of 45 minutes over two weeks
• Sham Reiki: 4 placebo sessions
• Control: no intervention
Anxiety was measured before and after the intervention using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, State Anxiety Scale (STAI-S).
What did the researchers find?
After four sessions, mothers who received Reiki had significantly lower anxiety scores than mothers in both the sham Reiki and control groups.
Perhaps particularly interesting was that the Reiki group was the only group to experience a statistically significant reduction in anxiety from before to after the intervention.
Neither the sham Reiki group nor the control group showed a statistically significant change.
The researchers concluded that Reiki significantly reduced anxiety among mothers of hospitalized children and suggested that it may offer a non-invasive complementary approach to supporting family members during the stress of a child's hospitalization.
For us, this study is also an important reminder that compassionate, integrative care does not necessarily end with the patient. ❤️
When a child is in hospital, the experience can affect the entire family. Supporting the emotional wellbeing of the parents and caregivers who are walking beside that child is an important part of considering the wider experience of care.
At Medical Reiki International, we will continue sharing Reiki research studies and their findings as we explore the growing body of research surrounding Reiki and its potential place within complementary and integrative healthcare.
