We are looking to recruit more people to join our department. If you have ever been curious about how to get started or just are wondering if you can, please reach out to me. We are a fairly busy service taking between 250-280 calls a year, and we also do many community events. Here are some facts that may answer some of your questions.

1. What do I need to join?
Answer: You only need a drivers license. All of our volunteers are CPR certified, and 3 of our members are instructors and that is free for you. We ask that you participate on at least 20 calls per year and attend 6 of the 12 meetings that are business meetings and trainings.

2. What if I’m not good with medical things?
Answer: I wasn’t when I started nearly 16 years ago! I wanted to drive fast with the lights and sirens on 🤣🤣….and I can help lift. After doing that for 7 years, I decided that I needed to do more and started EMT class. Biggest mistake I made, I wish now I would have started years before.

3. But I work during the day and don’t have much time for something like this.
Answer: We have calls at night and we can always use more help anytime that you can. Everyone on our department works, days and nights, we try to get everyone back to their beds as quickly as possible.

We know that this isn’t for everyone, and sometimes (like me) you find that you have a passion for helping those in need. We do not expect that everyone will or can become an EMT and that you can just be a driver, that’s okay, and maybe like me you will find a drive to become an EMT as you continue. If you eventually decide you want to try to become an EMT, we help you as much as we can, we need more EMTs and we are more than willing to help you succeed. We are just asking that if you have considered it to reach out and we can discuss it. All training are covered, you never have to pay for any training.

As we are getting close to the end of summer, seems like it just started, we will be at the Tecumseh Aquatic Center this Friday evening from 8-midnight handing out glow sticks and popsicles. Please join us for a great evening!!!!

I want to thank everyone who volunteers so much of their time for our department. We have a really great team at Tecumseh Rescue that really show up when our community needs them. Please if you have considered joining us please feel free to reach out to me, you won’t regret it. We also want to thank Tecumseh Volunteer Fire as sometimes we need their assistance with driving or just simply manpower for carrying and moving patients and that is greatly appreciated.

When you call for an an ambulance in Nebraska, who comes?

Tonight, somewhere in Nebraska, a pager will sound in the dark. It might be on a kitchen counter beside a half-finished cup of tea, on a nightstand next to a sleeping spouse, clipped to the belt of someone who just got home from a long day at work, or tucked into the pocket of someone trying to rest before tomorrow begins.

And when it goes off, someone will stand up.

They will leave the warmth of their home.
They will leave their family.
They will leave their bed, their supper, their evening, their plans.
They will step into the cold or the heat or the wind, and they will drive toward someone else’s worst moment.

They will go, not because they are paid, or because it’s easy. They will go because someone needs help.

In our small towns, the ambulance doesn’t come from a distant city. It comes from down the street.

Volunteers are farmers, teachers, mechanics, nurse’s aides, and the neighbors you waved to yesterday.

And there are fewer of them now.

The same few people answering again and again.
The same volunteers missing sleep, missing meals, missing time with the people they love — because someone else needed them more in that moment.

They keep showing up, but they are getting tired, and many of them are aging.

And they cannot do it alone forever.

One day, the call might be for your house - for your child or parent.

It might be for the person you love most in this world.

When that day comes, you won’t ask how much money a volunteer makes. You won’t ask how tired they are. You won’t ask how many years they’ve been doing it.

You’ll just pray that someone answers.

Rural Nebraska has always taken care of its own. That’s who we are. We show up. We help.
We carry each other when things are hard.

But that only works if people are still willing to step forward.

You don’t have to know everything today.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to be fearless.

You just have to be willing.

Because someday, the life on the other end of that call might belong to someone you love.

And someday, the person they’re waiting for
might be you.
