Not everyone knows what a spinal cord injury really means β€” and that's exactly why we're talking about it. πŸŽ—οΈ

Swipe through to learn what a spinal cord injury is, how it affects the body, and why it doesn't have to mean the end of independence β€” including driving independence. ➑️

Did you know nearly 18,000 people in the United States sustain a spinal cord injury every year? πŸŽ—οΈ

September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month β€” and we're dedicating this month to the SCI community: sharing education, resources, and a message that driving independence may be more possible than you think.

Whether you're newly injured, years into your recovery, or supporting someone you love β€” this month is for you. Follow along all September. πŸ’›

Some of the most important inventions in history started with one person solving their own problem. πŸš—πŸ’›

Ralph Braun was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. In 1966, unable to find a vehicle that worked for him, he built his own β€” outfitting a postal jeep with a homemade wheelchair lift and hand controls so he could drive to work independently.

That one jeep became a company. That company became BraunAbility. And BraunAbility's wheelchair-accessible vehicles are now on roads across the world.

His story is a reminder that accessibility innovation doesn't just benefit one person. It ripples outward β€” changing lives in ways the original inventor could never have imagined.

That's the power of refusing to stop. πŸ’›

We don't talk about this enough β€” but aggressive driving doesn't just put others at risk. It puts YOU at risk too. πŸš—

When you drive aggressively β€” whether it's speeding, tailgating, or letting road rage take over β€” your body responds to that stress in real, measurable ways: elevated blood pressure, increased cortisol levels, impaired reaction time, and reduced decision-making ability.

In other words: the angrier you are behind the wheel, the less safe you are behind the wheel.

Here are a few things that actually help:
βœ… Plan ahead and allow extra time β€” stress spikes when you're running late
βœ… Breathe deeply if frustration rises β€” it physically lowers your heart rate
βœ… Don't engage with aggressive drivers β€” it never ends well
βœ… Treat the road like a shared space, not a competition

Safe driving is calm driving. πŸ’› Link in bio for the full blog post.

This one's for the families, the friends, the caregivers, and the community. πŸ’›

Supporting someone living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy looks different for every relationship β€” but at its core, it always comes back to the same thing: showing up for the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

That means celebrating the wins (yes, including every driving milestone πŸš—). It means advocating for accessibility in every space you share. It means asking what they need instead of assuming. And it means spreading the word that tools and programs like ours exist β€” because too many people still don't know.

If this post reaches even one person who needed to hear that driving independence is possible for someone they love β€” that's everything to us. πŸ’›

For most teenagers, learning to drive seems like a rite of passage. πŸš—

For teens with disabilities, it can also come with a lot of uncertainty β€” questions about whether it's possible, what the process looks like, and whether anyone out there actually knows how to help.

If your teenager has a disability and has started asking about driving β€” this one's for you. πŸš—πŸ’›

It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents: ""Is driving even possible for my child?""

More often than not, the answer is yes β€” and the path there looks different for every young person. Here's what to know:

βœ… A comprehensive driving evaluation is always the first step β€” not a yes or no answer, but a personalized assessment of abilities and options
βœ… We work with teens from age 15+ across a wide range of conditions
βœ… Adaptive equipment, specialized training techniques, and a patient specialist make all the difference
βœ… Your child's driving journey starts with one conversation

We're here to help you navigate it. Link in bio to get started. πŸ’›
