Pride graffiti

Story time:
Today’s graffiti is saying a lot. It’s saying that you should be proud to put out who you are. It’s saying to be loud about it. It’s saying that we won’t be hidden. It’s spray painted on buildings and water towers and everywhere because we are here and we are proud of who we are!

I know this was shorter than they have been in the past but I feel the point of this one is bold and strong and doesn’t need too much exposition.

Trigger warning story
This discoball is meant to represent Pulse Nightclub in Florida. Pulse was a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida that in June of 2016 became the site of one of the largest and most deadly mass shootings against the LGBTQIA community in the history of America. 49 people were killed and dozens more were injured, all because they wanted to go out to a nightclub that catered to the gay community. Pulse, for many years, stood as a symbol of the strength and resilience of the LGBTQIA community. A symbol recognized by the state of Florida which allowed the cross walk to be painted rainbow in remembrance of those souls that were tragically taken from us, until this past year…
The Government of Florida passed a law that said all streets must comply with uniform traffic control standards and prohibits pavement markings. They said this was not directed at the memorial crosswalk, however, the government took the chance to remove the rainbow and cite this new law. This was a strategic move trying to erase the LGBTQIA community and force us back in the closet so they don’t have to see us. They didn’t expect what happened next….
The LGBTQIA community came out in full force with chalk and started to color the crosswalk themselves. They did this everyday, and every night the government would come back and wash it away. Everytime it was washed away, the community would do it again and again. The lesson to be learned here is that we won’t be silenced. We will always remember those who were taken and continue the fight for a world where everyone can live openly and safely.

The matchbox represents burning things down and the wording on it of burn the closet holds special meaning for most people in the LGBTQIA community. I made this flash to speak to those people. People like me that refuse to be put back in the closet and hide who we are. While we don’t need to be out there rubbing it in everyone’s face, I will NEVER tell anyone I don’t like men. No matter who they are or the situation I’m in or anything, I will never be put back in the closet! I burned that closet to the ground and I am proudly outside of it. If you are struggling to leave the closet, trust me, we’ve all been there. You don’t need to be afraid and you can burn your closet down in your own time, but you will be much happier for it.
