Snoring, gasping, or waking up struggling to breathe? Please don't chalk that up to allergies alone — this one's worth getting exactly right.

Nasal congestion from allergies can absolutely make nighttime breathing louder and more labored. But allergies do not cause sleep apnea. Loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, or serious daytime exhaustion are signs that deserve their own dedicated medical evaluation, separate from — and in addition to — your allergy plan.

Two different problems can genuinely be happening in the same bed, on the same night. Getting each one treated starts with naming them correctly instead of blaming everything on the easier explanation.

October 16th is World Allergy Awareness Day — a day dedicated to something our team thinks about all year long.

Allergic disease affects an enormous number of people worldwide, yet it's still often dismissed as 'just a sneeze' or 'just some itchy eyes.' For many, it's chronic congestion, disrupted sleep, missed workdays, and symptoms that never fully let up without the right diagnosis and treatment plan.

Awareness starts with taking symptoms seriously enough to ask what's actually causing them. If today is the nudge you needed, Harker Heights Allergy is here when you're ready to find out.

You showered this morning. You didn't shower after your evening run — and that might be exactly why you can't stop sneezing at 10pm.

Pollen collects on hair, skin, clothes, shoes, even your pet's fur. Skip the rinse-off after time outdoors, and you could be transferring an entire day's exposure straight onto your pillow, where you'll spend the next eight hours breathing it in.

A quick shower and a change of clothes before bed sounds almost too simple, but it's a small habit with a surprisingly big payoff on high pollen days — especially in a season that never fully turns off.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a quiet moment to honor the traditions, stories, and communities that have called this land home for generations.

It's a gentle invitation to learn a little more, appreciate a little deeper, and hold space for histories that don't always get their due.

However you spend today, we hope it includes a moment of gratitude for the cultures that continue to shape our world.

You wake up stuffy every morning. By the time you're at your desk, you're sneezing. By bedtime, it's a full-blown cough. Coincidence? Probably not.

Allergy symptoms often follow a pattern — the time they hit, the place you're in, what you were doing right before. It's not a diagnosis, but it's a clue.

Different allergens can overlap and mimic each other, so the pattern alone won't name your trigger. What it will do is give your allergist something real to work with instead of a vague 'I just feel off sometimes.'

This month, we're breaking down what your symptom schedule might actually be telling you — one time of day, one location, one habit at a time.

Today is World Mental Health Day — a reminder that taking care of your mind deserves the same attention as taking care of your body.

Mental health looks different for everyone. Some days it's therapy or medication. Other days it's a walk outside, an honest conversation, or simply giving yourself permission to rest. None of it needs to be complicated to be valid.

However you observe today, we hope it includes a little extra kindness toward yourself.

Your child's allergy plan shouldn't stop at the classroom door.
The bus ride, recess, PE, assemblies, sports practice, field trips — allergens and asthma triggers don't check a schedule.

Confirm who carries the medication during each of these moments, and whether that person actually knows how to use it.

A plan that only covers first period isn't a full plan.

Halloween is one of the biggest candy days of the year — but for an estimated one in 13 kids living with food allergy, it isn't always simple fun. FARE, the nation's leading food allergy nonprofit, is encouraging families to make one small addition to their Halloween plans this year: a teal pumpkin.

Setting a teal pumpkin out signals to trick-or-treaters and their families that a non-food treat option is available alongside the candy. Teal itself is recognized as the official color of food allergy awareness. Low-cost items like stickers, bubbles, glow sticks, and pencils make safe, inclusive alternatives — just keep them in a separate bowl to avoid cross-contact with allergens.

It's a small swap with a real impact. The movement has grown since families in all 50 states first joined in 2014, and with roughly one in 13 kids affected, there's a good chance a house on your own street will benefit. Grab a can of teal paint, add your home to FARE's map, and help make trick-or-treating a little more welcoming for every kid on the block.

“I have a food allergy. I need to check with my teacher or parents before I eat this.”

It's a simple sentence, but for a child with allergies, it can be one of the most powerful things they learn all year. Practice it at home until it becomes second nature — the same way you'd practice a fire drill.

Confidence is a skill. Let's help them build it before day one.
