Hi Buddies!
Last week we had a successful Eat a Rainbow Challenge. It lasted all week and it was fun seeing so many colorful plates shared throughout the community. Thanks to everyone for making it such a fun challenge!
Sometimes old remedies stick around for a reason.
Our grandparents and great-grandparents had some remarkable ways of caring for themselves and their families — from mustard plasters to warm drinks with honey, lemon, and ginger. Chicken soup and peppermint tea were especially popular while I was growing up, and many of those simple comforts are still being appreciated today.
One study found that peppermint oil may help relieve digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating, and indigestion. Peppermint may also help increase alertness and memory, which could improve concentration according to Healthline.com.
Tip: Add crushed peppermint leaves to water for a fresh and cooling flavor.
What else from the past is finding new appreciation today?
How about an Epsom salt bath? Epsom salts are often used in the evening before bed whenever people feel tightness in their muscles or simply need to relax and unwind. Warm baths themselves can help the body slow down after a busy day, and many people find that Epsom salts help soothe sore or tired muscles and ease stiffness.
Tip: Draw yourself an evening bath and indulge your senses by adding a few drops of lavender oil.
And let’s not forget chicken soup. Grandma said it would make me feel better, and she was right.
One study found that when participants consumed soup, their symptoms were reduced slightly and the duration of illness decreased by about 1.5 to 2 days. Researchers also found that soup helped lower certain blood markers associated with inflammation.
Soup isn’t a cure, but it may help people feel better more quickly. Its warmth and hydration can soothe irritated airways and help loosen mucus, making symptoms easier to manage. In addition, broth is easy to digest, which matters when your appetite is low or your stomach feels unsettled. Chicken broth is often recommended, but vegetarian and vegan soups may offer similar comforting benefits as well.
Sometimes wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. A warm cup of tea, a bowl of soup, a relaxing bath, or simply slowing down for the evening may not solve everything — but small comforting habits still matter.
