Healing Hands for our Equine Friends

Healing Hands for our Equine Friends Equine sports massage therapy is a powerful tool in injury prevention for horses.Therapeutic Massage also plays a key role in post-trauma rehabilitation.

Therapeutic Massage plays a key role in post-trauma rehabilitation, to get your horse back into work sooner with less chance of weakness or re-injury. Massage breaks down scar tissue and brings blood and oxygen to the area for speedier healing of muscle damage. EMT will work on the whole body of the horse so the horse can function in a balanced way and release any compensatory muscle tensions also

linked with injury. Each muscle attaches to two or more bones and crosses one joint or more. Muscles free from tension, with agility and movement, will carry out a function of keeping joints aligned. This allows joint fluid to flow evenly within the joint, and this reduces unnatural wear and tear of joints. Hence the term ‘well-oiled joints’. Each muscle is attached to bone by tendons. Muscles are designed to take 90% of workload and tendons the other 10%. If the muscle isn’t functioning properly then the tendons will take more load. This is obviously very important in horses as ultimately it can lead to bowed tendons. Equine massage therapy is a very powerful tool in injury prevention for horses.

I extend my gratitude to the Newtown Bridle Lands Association for inviting me as a guest speaker this evening. It was a pleasure to discuss and educate attendees about the benefits of equine sports massage therapy. I appreciated the opportunity to meet everyone. Special thanks to Paul Bruenn for arranging my invitation and supporting the work I do for our equine athletes.

Let’s talk about the difference of massage & PEMF!
Last night after taking to another equine massage therapist halfway across the country, it seems to be a common thing that people just want to use machines over a professionally trained person!
Massage & PEMF are two entirely different modalities and one does not replace the other. The machine does not rebalance the horse, stretch the horse, know which side is worse than the other or which area needs extra attention. It does not feel a muscle relax or release, or release knots if the practitioner doesn’t know how to find them, and it generally does the same thing for each spot throughout the body. It cannot feel if there is a subluxation somewhere, and cannot change the structure of the horse how I share with my before & after images. It also doesn’t notice which side is tighter, atrophied, or able to tell how the horse carries itself just by feeling the horse and looking at their muscling. It can’t tell if your horse has a tack fitting issue, a primary issue, where the horse is compensating, I can go on and on…
If PEMF is done correctly, your horse should not be sore the next day or hate having it done. PEMF goes to the cellular level and helps regenerate healthy cells to that area something a massage cannot do. It also goes deeper than a massage less invasively and just overall deeper. A huge added benefit of it is that it can help speed up the healing process of soft tissue injuries and help arthritic horses in a different way than massage does.
I offer both together because I think it’s getting the best of both worlds, however one does not replace the other.
Both offer increase circulation, blood flow, decrease pain & inflammation, and while PEMF can help eliminate scar tissue pretty much anywhere, massage can as well in some areas!
So let’s remember to use highly trained professionals instead of constantly just having machines used on your horse’s, I bet you will learn a TON more about your horse’s body and if you have someone that do both it’s a huge added bonus!

A MESSAGE OF CONCERN

It is becoming more and more concerning how many horses I am seeing with pain, inflammation, soreness and more serious complications following treatment with electrotherapy (mostly PEMF) by unqualified people.

I’m not posting this to discredit anyone, I am simply posting this because I care about the animals.

Qualified practitioners have spent years gaining their knowledge and qualifications, and often this includes specific time training to use electrotherapy correctly.

There are occasions when electrotherapy should never be applied and can cause further damage or complications to an already existing condition. Likewise using the incorrect frequencies can lead to increased muscle soreness and inflammation.

I urge anyone trying to offer their horse the very best care to do their homework about a person applying electrotherapy. The industry is not regulated enough and therefore machine manufactures will sell a machine to anyone and they can use it however they wish.
Just because your trainer has a machine doesn’t mean they have the knowledge to use it. I’m qualified as a physio, it does not mean I can do your farriers job!

It is a rising concern amongst qualified professionals throughout the country, so please be careful and keep your horses safe. 🐴❤️

Photonic Acupuncture for Horses
Where ancient meridians meet modern light 🌈🐎

Photonic acupuncture is a non-invasive therapy that uses low-level laser or LED light to stimulate traditional acupuncture points and meridian pathways instead of needles. Same energetic highways, different vehicle. Think of it as sending tiny packets of light down the nervous system and fascia instead of metal pins.

What it actually does (in real horse terms)

Photonic acupuncture works through photobiomodulation, meaning light energy interacts with cells and nerves to create a biological response:

• Stimulates acupuncture points without needles
• Increases local circulation and lymphatic flow
• Modulates the nervous system (parasympathetic activation)
• Reduces pain and inflammation
• Encourages tissue repair and ATP production
• Releases fascial restriction along meridian lines

So you’re getting TCM + neurology + cellular therapy layered together.

Why horses respond so well

Horses are basically walking fascia and nervous systems with opinions. They’re incredibly sensitive to subtle input, which makes them ideal candidates for light-based acupuncture.

Most horses:
• Relax within minutes
• Start yawning, licking, chewing
• Drop their head and soften their eyes
• Show immediate posture and movement changes

No needles, no restraint, no stress. The nervous system stays in “safe mode,” which is where real healing happens.

Common uses in equine practice

Photonic acupuncture is especially useful for:

Pain & Inflammation

• Back pain
• Neck & poll tension
• SI & hip discomfort
• Joint inflammation
• Arthritic horses

Performance & Nervous System

• Poor topline development
• Stiffness or uneven movement
• Compensation patterns
• Behavioral tension or anxiety
• Horses that don’t tolerate needles

Rehab & Healing

• Tendon and ligament injuries
• Post-surgical recovery
• Wound healing
• Scar tissue release
• Neurological cases

Photonic vs Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional Photonic
Needles Light
Mechanical stimulation Neurological + cellular stimulation
Can stress sensitive horses Zero stress
Requires needle tolerance Ideal for needle-averse horses
Practitioner skill dependent Highly repeatable & precise

Modern anatomy finally caught up with TCM.

Meridians map almost perfectly onto:
• Fascial lines
• Nerve pathways
• Vascular routes
• Interstitial fluid flow

So when you stimulate an acupuncture point with light, you’re not just working “energy,” you’re influencing real connective tissue networks that regulate movement, posture, and pain.

That’s why photonic acupuncture fits so beautifully into integrative equine bodywork models like what I am already at Hy 5 Equine!

We are already working:
Fascia
Nervous system
Circulation
Alignment
Energy balance

Photonic acupuncture just gives you a laser pointer for the nervous system 🔦🧠🐎

Photonic acupuncture is a needle-free therapy that uses therapeutic light to stimulate acupuncture points, helping regulate the nervous system, reduce pain, improve movement, and support whole-body healing in horses.

“Same meridians, no needles, just light.” ✨
