A year ago this week I was in Newburyport for my Master Practitioner immersion.
And with a new class experiencing their immersion, I keep thinking about one of the simplest things I learned early on… and how much it actually impacts everything.
Being at cause vs being at effect.
If this is new to you, here’s how I think about it.
Being at effect is when it feels like what’s happening around you is calling the shots.
Like… you go to post something and immediately think,
“People aren’t really engaging anyway,”
or “This probably won’t land,”
and you close your laptop or tell yourself you’ll do it later.
It just… quietly shapes what you do next.
⸻
Being at cause is more like catching that in real time.
Noticing, “Oh, I’m hesitating right now.”
Seeing what’s actually going on underneath that moment.
And then deciding what you want to do from there.
Sometimes that means you post anyway.
Sometimes you shift what you want to say.
Sometimes you take a breath and come back to it with a little more intention.
But you’re not just automatically reacting.
⸻
That’s really the difference.
It’s not about making yourself do something or pretending things don’t affect you.
It’s about staying connected to the fact that you still have a say in how you move.
⸻
I still practice this all the time.
There are definitely moments I catch it right away… and other times where I realize it after the fact and go, ohhh, there it is.
But even that awareness changes things.
⸻
If this is new for you, I’m curious what stands out.
Where do you notice yourself hesitating or pulling back?
