Joel Wright Art Studio

Joel Wright Art Studio Joel Wright shares art techniques and the business of making art worth collecting. Within these hallowed walls, art is not just created, it is lived.

In the enchanting realm where the hallowed traditions of fine art intermingle with the age-old craft of tattooing, you will find the unique and spirited Joel Wright Art Studio. This sanctuary, cultivated by the visionary Joel Wright, stands as an embodiment of creative expression and artistic independence, nestled in an environment far removed from the toxic shadows that often haunt the realm of c

reativity. The studio operates as an artist’s haven, each resident artist is an independent entity, autonomous and free in their pursuit of artistic expression. These creators do not operate under the binding rules of conventional business hours, instead choosing to craft their works in a private, appointment-only setting. Their dedication and commitment to the individuality of their craft set them apart, allowing them to delve deep into the soul of their art and emerge with creations that truly resonate with their audience. It is an intimate conversation between the artist and the observer, a dynamic dance of ideas and emotions that finds a physical form in both hanging art and etched skin. The gallery, resplendent with an array of dynamic pieces, presents a captivating journey into the minds of its resident artists. Visitors can traverse this journey, becoming part of the artistic process as they interact with the creations on display. The adjacent tattoo studio offers a different, yet equally immersive, experience. Here, art leaps off the canvas and onto the skin, transforming the human body into a living, breathing work of art. Each tattoo is meticulously crafted in private sessions, transforming personal narratives into indelible symbols and images. The privacy and exclusivity of these sessions add a sense of reverence to the process, turning the creation of a tattoo into an intimate ritual between the artist and the client. Yet, Joel Wright Art Studio is more than just a space for creation. It also serves as an agency, diligently working to illuminate the talents of its resident artists and connect them with a diverse clientele. The studio provides a supportive platform, helping artists thrive while maintaining their independence. It is an advocate for creativity, tirelessly working to share the unique visions of its resident artists with the world. Joel Wright Art Studio is a testament to the power of art and the human spirit. It's a realm where creativity is kindled, talents are honed, and artistic dreams are brought to life. Whether you're seeking a piece of fine art to adorn your space or a personalized tattoo to tell your story, you're invited to step into this world of creative freedom and experience the magic for yourself. While we encourage you to explore and experience the studio, please remember that all interactions are by appointment only. To embark on your journey, please reach out directly to the artist of your choice. They are eager to share their world with you and create a piece of art that is uniquely yours.

Quinacridone Magenta and Phthalo Green are opposites in a very useful way.

As they move toward the middle, the intensity drops and the mixtures shift into deep violets, muted greens, and near-neutral darks. This is a great example of how complementary colors can create subtle, complex mixtures instead of just “mud.”

Vita brevis, ars longa, occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile.

A good translation:

Life is short, art is long, opportunity is fleeting, experience is dangerous, and judgment is difficult.

I’ve been learning a little Latin for fun, and this phrase keeps coming back around because it feels true in the studio.

Painting is not something you master once and then move on from. Drawing, color, composition, value, observation, taste, discipline, and expression keep unfurling the longer you stay with them.

That is not discouraging to me. It is the joy of it.

There is always another painting to create. And the painting has a life of its own that can outlive the creator.

Life is short, but art keeps going.

Burnt Sienna and Quinacridone Magenta make a beautiful range of warm reds, violets, and earthy rose colors.

This combination is especially interesting because Burnt Sienna already has an earthy warmth, while Quinacridone Magenta brings intensity and depth. As they move toward the middle, the mixtures become less obvious and more natural.

That middle range is often where the useful painting colors live.

One of the strangest parts of being an artist is how much time gets pulled away from actually making art. I guess its everyone on some level.

There is always something else to do like... take photos and make content and then write descriptions and then post on social media and respond to comments. Then you need to update the website. Answer messages. Package and ship work. Price things. Research supplies. Organize files. Plan the next project. Think about the business. And it just goes on and on.

All of it matters, but it can also start to crowd out the one main thing. The artwork.

I think this is why having a simple practice matters so much. Something like drawing, color matching, composition studies, or value studies gives you a way back into the actual act of being an artist. It keeps your hand, eye, and mind connected to the work.

The business of art matters, but the work still has to remain the center.

Quinacridone Magenta and Yellow Ochre create a surprisingly useful range of warm, muted colors.

This is one of the reasons I like doing simple mixing studies. You start to see how two pigments can create far more than “pink plus yellow.” The middle mixtures move into earthy rose, muted orange, and warm neutral territory.

These are the kinds of colors that show up everywhere in painting: skin, sunsets, dried grasses, old walls, warm shadows, and subtle transitions.

A notan study strips the composition down to the simplest relationship between light and dark.

That makes it easier to see the structure before getting distracted by color, detail, texture, or subject matter. The painting example beside it shows how that simple arrangement can become a more developed image while still keeping the same visual foundation.

This is one of the best ways to study composition without overcomplicating it.

If you want to improve realistic painting, I think there are four major levers you can pull: color matching, drawing, composition, and value.

There are a thousand other things artists can study, and most of them matter at some point. Brushwork matters. Edges matter. Materials matter. Style matters. But if the drawing is weak, the values are off, the composition is confusing, or the color relationships do not match the reference, the painting is going to struggle no matter how much detail you add.

This is one of the reasons I’m building Joel Wright Art Studio around these core skills. If you get better at seeing color, drawing accurately, imagining composition and communicating a high value, your artwork improves from the foundation.

The basics are not beginner work.

Dioxazine Purple + Yellow Ochre

This is one of those color mixes that seems like it should not work.

Purple and yellow are opposites on the color wheel, so when you mix them together, you might expect mud.

And you would mostly be right.

But mud is beautiful too.

Some of the most useful painting colors live in that muddy middle range. Muted violets, warm grays, earthy browns, smoky neutrals, and strange olive tones.

These are the colors that make brighter colors feel more powerful. They create atmosphere, depth, shadow, and subtlety.

A painting does not need every color to hit at full saturation.

Sometimes the quiet, muddy colors do the heavy lifting.
