On this week’s live edition of Ask the Doctor, Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton covered a wide range of topics focused on eye health, wellness, healthy aging, and cutting-edge nutritional science.

The show began with exciting news about opportunities at Lange Eye Institute. We discussed hiring scribes and optical sales professionals for both the current Lange Eye Institute in The Villages and the new Lange Eye Institute Ocala, which is scheduled to open January 1, 2027.

A major portion of the program focused on curcumin and its growing role in both systemic and ocular health. Dr. Lange explained why Fortifeye Next Gen Curcumin utilizes Curcugen®, a food-grade oleoresin turmeric extract with dramatically enhanced bioavailability compared to standard curcumin. We discussed how many curcumin supplements rely on black pepper extract (piperine) or synthetic delivery systems to increase absorption, while Curcugen® offers a highly absorbable alternative derived directly from turmeric.

The discussion expanded into the many potential benefits of curcumin, including its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We reviewed emerging evidence supporting curcumin’s role in retinal health, helping reduce oxidative stress, supporting healthy inflammatory pathways, assisting patients with chronic uveitis, supporting dry eye sufferers, and potentially benefiting individuals concerned about cataracts and glaucoma. Curcumin continues to be one of the most promising natural compounds in both eye care and overall wellness.

We also devoted a segment to dry eye disease. If you’ve tried artificial tears, medications, supplements, and other treatments but still suffer from symptoms such as burning, grittiness, sandy sensations, fluctuating vision, tearing, itching, and discomfort, advanced in-office therapies may be the next step. Dr. Lange discussed how Lumenis OptiLight IPL and Lumenis OptiLift radiofrequency treatment can work synergistically to improve meibomian gland dysfunction, reduce inflammation, tighten lax lower eyelids, and provide long-term relief for many chronic dry eye sufferers. These advanced treatments are available at Lange Eye Institute in The Villages.

Another fascinating segment focused on telomeres—the protective end caps of our chromosomes that play a key role in cellular aging. We reviewed research suggesting that regular resistance training may help preserve telomere length and support healthy aging. Studies indicate that as little as 90 minutes of resistance training per week may positively influence biological aging markers. Next week’s program will expand on this topic and discuss additional lifestyle strategies that may help slow chromosomal aging and promote longevity.

As always, the show featured live listener questions and practical health advice designed to help you live a healthier, stronger, and longer life.

Thank you for joining us on Ask the Doctor with Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton. Be sure to subscribe, like, and share this episode, and join us next week for another live discussion on health, nutrition, wellness, longevity, and eye care.

Protecting Muscle & Health While Using GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications with Dr. Michael Lange & Dr. Susan Summerton.
On today’s edition of Ask the Dr, Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton opened the show with exciting news about the continued expansion of the Lange brand. Dr. Lange announced that Lange Eye Institute is expanding into the Ocala area after purchasing the historic 1939 Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Ocala, Florida. The iconic landmark is being transformed into the future home of Lange Eye Institute Ocala, a state-of-the-art eye care center that will feature some of the latest technology for diagnosing, treating, and managing eye disease and optimizing visual performance.

The discussion also focused on the rapid growth and expansion of Fortifeye Vitamins and the company’s continued development of science-based nutritional supplements designed to help support total body wellness, muscle health, cognitive function, metabolism, and healthy aging.

Dr. Lange and Dr. Summerton emphasized that one of the biggest nutritional mistakes many people make is failing to consume enough high-quality protein, especially at breakfast. Dr. Lange described his own breakfast from this morning, which included eggs, red bell peppers, mushrooms, pomegranate, and a nutrient-packed beverage made with spring water, chocolate Fortifeye Rejuvenate, Fortifeye Creapure® Creatine + myHMB® + Vitamin D, along with one Fortifeye Focus supplement.

The doctors discussed how creatine and myHMB are not only important for muscle growth and strength, but also may play a major role in brain health, cognition, metabolism, recovery, and healthy aging. Dr. Lange explained the importance of using German-made Creapure® creatine, emphasizing that if a creatine supplement does not specifically say “Creapure®,” it typically originates from China. He discussed how Fortifeye’s formula combines creatine, myHMB®, and vitamin D in a synergistic ratio designed to maximize muscle protein synthesis, support fat metabolism, help combat myostatin activity, and optimize cognitive benefits.

The conversation then shifted into GLP-1 medications and the growing concerns regarding potential side effects. Dr. Lange and Dr. Summerton discussed how some adverse events may not be solely caused by the medication itself, but may instead be related to underlying health conditions, dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, muscle wasting, and rapid weight loss. They discussed concerns such as sarcopenia, “Ozempic face,” dehydration, and even ischemic optic neuropathy.

The doctors focused heavily on science-based strategies to combat the negative effects often associated with aggressive weight loss programs and GLP-1 drugs. They emphasized the importance of maintaining muscle mass through proper protein intake, resistance training, hydration, targeted nutritional supplementation, and consuming carbohydrates strategically — especially after workouts when muscles are primed to replenish glycogen stores and recover.

Dr. Lange explained why carbohydrates are not the enemy and discussed the importance of post-workout carbohydrate intake for muscle recovery, hormone balance, metabolism, and performance. The doctors also discussed some of the potential negative consequences associated with long-term ketogenic dieting, chronic fasting, and excessive cold plunges when taken to extremes. They explained that many trends marketed as “healthy” may actually create hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiencies, loss of muscle mass, metabolic slowdown, and accelerated aging if not approached correctly.

The show also highlighted the concept of “skinny fat,” where individuals lose weight rapidly but also lose valuable muscle tissue, leaving them appearing frail, weak, wrinkled, and metabolically unhealthy. To combat this growing problem, Dr. Lange discussed the development of the Fortifeye Fit Transformation System, designed to help individuals lose unhealthy body fat while maintaining muscle mass, skin integrity, strength, and overall vitality.

The program concluded with Dr. Lange announcing that the highly anticipated Fortifeye Fit Pro is finally back in stock and available again in two flavors after being on back order.

This episode of Ask the Dr delivered a powerful message centered around science-based nutrition, muscle preservation, brain health, healthy aging, strategic supplementation, and the critical importance of adequate protein intake — especially for individuals using GLP-1 medications or following aggressive weight loss programs.

Not all eye exams are created equally.

This National Public Health Week, we’re raising awareness about the difference between online eye tests and in-person comprehensive eye exams.

While apps may seem convenient, they can’t detect serious eye and health conditions like glaucoma, diabetes, or hypertension—and may give a false sense of security.

👁️Your eyes deserve more than a screen.

💊👁️ Certain Medications May Increase Risk of Eye Inflammation (Uveitis)

A large review of FDA adverse event data (7,300+ cases) identified 13 commonly used systemic medications** linked to higher reports of uveitis, an inflammatory eye condition that can affect vision.

🔎 Medications with the strongest signals included:

* Antivirals (like cidofovir)
* Antibiotics (like rifabutin, moxifloxacin)
* Biologic drugs (used for autoimmune diseases)
* Cancer therapies (MEK & BRAF inhibitors, immunotherapies)

⚠️ Important context:
These findings do NOT prove the drugs directly cause uveitis—in many cases, the underlying diseases (like infections, autoimmune conditions, or cancer) may also contribute to eye inflammation.

👥 Who may be at higher risk?

* Patients with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions
* Those with a history of uveitis
* Individuals on multiple immune-modulating or cancer therapies

👨‍⚕️ Takeaway

* Be aware of eye symptoms (redness, pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision)
* Monitor more closely when using these medications
* Early detection = better outcomes

✅ Bottom line: If you’re on systemic medications—especially for infections, autoimmune disease, or cancer—don’t ignore new eye symptoms. Protecting your vision starts with awareness.

🚬 Smoking & Your Vision: What You Need to Know

A major new study of over 12 million patients confirms what eye doctors have long suspected—smoking significantly increases your risk of serious, vision-threatening eye diseases.

Here’s what the research found over a 10-year period:

👁️ Higher risk of multiple eye conditions:

* Cataracts (especially more aggressive types)
* Glaucoma (including angle-closure and eye pressure issues)
* Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
* Uveitis (inflammatory eye disease)
* Diabetic retinopathy & retinal vascular issues

📊 Some risks were nearly 2–2.5x higher in smokers compared to non-smokers.

💡 Why?
Smoking increases oxidative stress, reduces antioxidants, damages blood flow, and creates inflammation—all of which can harm delicate eye structures.

✅ The good news: Smoking is a modifiable risk factor—quitting can help protect not just your lungs and heart, but your sight too.

👀 Bottom line: If you smoke, your eyes are at risk. If you quit, your eyes benefit.

This study aims to explore the link between smoking and vision-threatening ocular conditions by analyzing the risk magnitude for the major ocular conditions.
