You stretch it. You roll it. You get the massage. And by Tuesday your neck is tight again. Here is what is actually going on.
A muscle that keeps re-tightening no matter what you do is almost never the real problem. It is a symptom. It is guarding. It has been assigned a job, holding, bracing, protecting, and it will keep doing that job until the thing underneath changes.
Very often that job is holding stress the rest of the system will not process. The body does not file physical and emotional in separate drawers the way we do. A nervous system stuck on high alert shows up as muscular tension, and the tension you can feel is the part that made it to the surface.
This is why chasing the spot that hurts fails. You have to read the pattern producing it. Which muscle is compensating, what it is protecting, and how to give the whole system a reason to finally stand down. That is the work we do.
Save this if your neck, your traps, or your low back is stuck on repeat.
