The conversation around school food is changing as more people question whether children are receiving the right balance of nutrients during the school day.

Efforts to increase access to whole foods and reduce processed options are gaining attention across the country.

Supporters believe better meals can support children’s growth, focus, and overall well-being. Should schools make real food a bigger priority?

🐾💚 Happy 1st Day of School, Bulldogs! 💚🐾

I hope everyone has an amazing first day and a wonderful start to the school year!

Our son Gavin is having a bone marrow biopsy this morning, so I am at the hospital with him. Jared had to be at the fire department, so we are doing our best to juggle everything.

I will be back at the clinic sometime tonight, but I can't give an exact time just yet. If you're needing to be seen, please reach out and I'll do my best to get you taken care of as soon as I'm back.

Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding, and especially for the continued prayers for Gavin. We truly appreciate this community more than you know. 💚🙏

Good evening, guys. 💚
Vitality will be open tomorrow by appointment only.

Unfortunately, our son Gavin is back in the ICU, but we are pushing to get him home tomorrow as long as he remains stable enough.

He had another episode of bone marrow suppression that caused severe anemia and required multiple blood transfusions. Unfortunately, his kidneys also took another hit, likely related to the extremely low oxygen delivery from the anemia.

His bone marrow suppression appears to be progressively worsening, and right now the treatment options being discussed include daily steroids, chemotherapy, and immune-modulating medications to significantly suppress his immune system. Given everything his body and organs have already been through, those aren't ideal options and may not be something we choose to pursue.

I know many of you follow Gavin's page and have been praying for him and checking on our family. We truly appreciate all of the love, prayers, patience, and support more than you know. 💚

If you need to be seen tomorrow, please give me a call and we will make it work. Otherwise, we hope to be back to our normal schedule as soon as we can.

Thank you guys for understanding and for continuing to pray for our boy. 🙏

GALLSTONES: THERE’S MORE TO THE STORY THAN JUST A LOW-FAT DIET!

Most gallstones are made primarily of cholesterol. They can form when bile becomes too concentrated with cholesterol and the gallbladder isn't emptying efficiently.

So instead of focusing ONLY on avoiding fat, I like to look at supporting healthy bile composition, gallbladder function, digestion and metabolic health. 💚

A few of my favorite gallbladder-supportive nutrients/herbs:

🟡 Phosphatidylcholine / Sunflower Lecithin — Phosphatidylcholine is naturally found in bile and helps keep cholesterol dispersed.

🌿 Artichoke + Digestive Bitters — Support digestive secretions and healthy bile flow.

💧 Taurine — The liver uses taurine when making conjugated bile acids, which are important for digestion and fat absorption.

🌿 Curcumin — Supports a healthy inflammatory response and can stimulate bile flow and gallbladder contraction.

🌱 Chanca Piedra ("Stone Breaker") — Traditionally used for stone and liver/biliary support. I find this herb fascinating, but research for gallstones specifically is still limited—most human stone research has focused on kidney stones.

And don't forget the foundations:

🥦 Plenty of fiber
🫒 Moderate healthy fats
🍭 Reduce sugar/refined carbs
🚶 Regular movement
⚖️ Address insulin resistance
🐢 Lose weight gradually—not through crash dieting

The goal isn't an aggressive “gallbladder flush.”
It's creating healthier bile and a healthier metabolic environment so we address WHY stones may be forming in the first place.

⚠️ One important caveat: herbs that stimulate bile flow aren't appropriate for everyone, particularly if a stone may be obstructing a bile duct. Severe or persistent right-sided abdominal pain, fever, jaundice or vomiting needs medical evaluation.

Educational only. Supplements are supportive strategies and aren't proven substitutes for medical treatment of established gallstones.

Can Hashimoto's Be Reversed?

One of the biggest misconceptions about Hashimoto's is that it's simply a thyroid problem.

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition, meaning the immune system is attacking the thyroid. While thyroid medication replaces the hormones your thyroid can no longer make, it doesn't address why the immune system began attacking it in the first place.

Many functional medicine practitioners, including Dr. Anshul Gupta, focus on identifying and addressing the underlying factors that may be contributing to ongoing immune dysfunction.

These often include:
✔️ Healing the gut and supporting a healthy microbiome
✔️ Identifying food sensitivities (commonly gluten, dairy, or soy)
✔️ Correcting nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin D, selenium, zinc, magnesium, iron, and B12 when appropriate
✔️ Looking for chronic infections that may be keeping the immune system activated
✔️ Reducing exposure to environmental toxins and supporting the body's natural detoxification pathways
✔️ Improving blood sugar balance and reducing chronic inflammation
✔️ Prioritizing quality sleep, stress management, and nervous system regulation

The goal isn't simply to normalize a TSH level—it's to create an environment where the immune system is less likely to continue attacking the thyroid.

For some people, this can lead to lower thyroid antibody levels, fewer symptoms, and improved quality of life.

While Hashimoto's isn't considered "curable," many people are able to achieve long-term remission and significantly reduce autoimmune activity by addressing the root causes driving inflammation.

Thinking about starting a detox or gut cleanse? Read this first.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people jumping into parasite cleanses, detox programs, or multiple supplements because they want to feel better.

Instead, they end up feeling worse.

• Headaches
• Brain fog
• Fatigue
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Muscle aches

Many people in the wellness world call this a "Herx reaction." A true Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction is a recognized inflammatory response that occurs when treating certain bacterial infections. If you feel worse after starting a detox or cleanse, it doesn't necessarily mean the protocol is working. It may be a sign to slow down and reassess your approach.

Before trying to remove anything from the body, make sure the body's normal detoxification and elimination systems have what they need to function well. That means paying attention to things like hydration, nutrition, sleep, regular bowel movements, movement, and healthy liver and kidney function.

Just as importantly, don't overlook the most common reasons people don't feel well in the first place:

• Insulin resistance
• Chronic stress
• Poor sleep
• Nutrient deficiencies
• Gut dysfunction
• Hormone imbalances
• Chronic inflammation

These are much more common than parasites or heavy metal toxicity and are often where I begin my evaluation. At Vitality, my goal isn't to put you on a detox program and send you home with a bag full of supplements. It's to figure out what's actually contributing to your symptoms and help you decide where to start. The right treatment at the wrong time is still the wrong treatment.
