Mobile Geriatric Hygienist Perspectives | #3

Brushing and flossing may seem like simple daily tasks, but for many older adults, they can become overwhelming.

Arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia, limited mobility, or weakness can make it difficult to hold a toothbrush, manipulate floss, or complete a thorough oral care routine.

With a little assistance and consistency, caregivers can help reduce discomfort, support overall health, and preserve confidence and dignity.

Supporting daily oral care is one more way we can help our loved ones maintain their quality of life. 🦷🩵

A mobile dental hygienist’s perspective | #2 🩵

Dry mouth is more than an inconvenience, it’s one of the most common oral health challenges older adults face.

Many medications, mouth breathing, and oxygen therapy can reduce saliva. This can make it harder to eat, speak, swallow, taste food, and naturally protect the mouth from cavities, gum disease, and infection.. to name just a few effects!

Sometimes, improving comfort starts with something as simple as recognizing dry mouth.

Because everyone deserves the comfort, dignity, and confidence of a healthy smile at every stage of life. 🦷

A perspective from a mobile dental hygienist caring for some of our most vulnerable and deserving community members. 🩵

One of the hardest parts of caring for someone living with dementia is knowing they may not be able to tell you when something hurts.

A sore tooth, irritated gums, or an uncomfortable denture can show up as changes in eating, mood, or behavior instead of words.

It’s easy to assume these changes are just part of aging or memory loss, but sometimes the answer is much simpler.

A comfortable mouth means more than a healthy smile. It means preserving dignity in the moments that matter most.

Because everyone deserves the comfort, dignity, and confidence of a healthy smile at every stage of life.

More reasons flossing is important!
As they say, you don’t have to floss all of your teeth, just the ones you want to keep! 🦷 ✨

Scientists Discover a Simple Dental Habit That Protects the Brain”

Flossing has always been promoted as a way to protect teeth and gums, but new research suggests it might also protect the brain and heart. A large U.S. study following more than 6,000 people for 25 years has revealed that those who floss regularly had a significantly lower risk of suffering strokes caused by blood clots, as well as irregular heartbeats such as atrial fibrillation.

The numbers are striking. Flossing was linked to a 22% lower risk of ischemic stroke, a 44% lower risk of clots traveling from the heart, and a 12% lower risk of atrial fibrillation. These benefits were independent of brushing or dentist visits—meaning the act of flossing itself played a unique role.

Scientists believe the explanation lies in inflammation. Gum infections and untreated plaque can trigger long-term inflammation that stiffens arteries and disrupts heart rhythms. By removing plaque, flossing reduces infection and inflammation, lowering the risk of life-threatening complications far beyond the mouth.

It’s rare that a habit this small and inexpensive shows such a wide-reaching impact. A simple piece of floss, used regularly, may quietly become one of the most powerful tools for protecting both oral health and brain health.
