❤️ Peripheral Vascular Disease: The Hidden Circulation Problem You Shouldn't Ignore ❤️

Most people think about heart disease, but circulation problems can affect blood vessels throughout the entire body.

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) can affect the arteries and veins in your legs, neck, and abdomen. The challenging part is that many people have no symptoms until a serious problem develops.

🫀 Important vascular screenings include:

🔍 Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening An AAA is an enlargement of the body's largest artery. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms and can become life-threatening if they rupture.

Screening may be recommended for: • Adults age 65 and older • Current or former smokers • Those with a family history of aneurysms

🧠 Carotid Artery Screening The carotid arteries supply blood to the brain. Plaque buildup in these arteries can increase the risk of stroke.

🚶 Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Screening PAD occurs when plaque narrows the arteries supplying blood to the legs.

Symptoms may include: • Leg pain when walking • Calf cramping • Slow-healing wounds • Cold feet • Numbness or weakness

Many people assume these symptoms are simply part of aging. They are not.

🦵 Venous Disease Screening Leg swelling, varicose veins, heaviness, aching, and skin changes may be signs of venous insufficiency.

❤️ The Bottom Line

Your vascular health is about more than just your heart.

Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, and venous disease can help identify problems early, often before symptoms become severe.

If you have risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of vascular disease, ask whether vascular screening may be right for you.

❤️ A Life-Saving Innovation in Structural Heart Care: The BASILICA Procedure ❤️

Did you know there is a specialized technique that can make certain high-risk valve procedures safer? It’s called the BASILICA procedure, and it is changing what’s possible in structural heart disease treatment.

🫀 What is BASILICA?
BASILICA stands for Bioprosthetic or Native Aortic Scallop Intentional Laceration to Prevent Coronary Artery Obstruction.

It is a technique used during transcatheter valve procedures to prevent blockage of the coronary arteries, which can be a serious complication.

⚙️ How does it work?
During a minimally invasive valve procedure, a cardiologist carefully splits a portion of the valve leaflet. This allows blood to continue flowing freely to the coronary arteries after the new valve is placed.

💡 Why is this important?
Without BASILICA, some patients may not be candidates for life-saving transcatheter valve replacement due to risk of coronary obstruction.

With this technique, we can:
✔️ Expand treatment options
✔️ Improve safety
✔️ Treat higher-risk patients who previously had limited options

👤 Who may benefit?
Patients with complex valve disease, prior valve replacements, or anatomy that increases risk during transcatheter procedures.

❤️ The bottom line
Advances like BASILICA are allowing us to treat more patients safely and effectively than ever before.

At Toledo Cardiology Consultants, we are committed to bringing the most advanced structural heart therapies to Northwest Ohio.
