This client came in with a healing issue from a piercing done elsewhere. I do prefer to start my clients off with studs to avoid these reactions, but let's break down why this happened.
The hoop itself is too thin, it should be a minimum of 14g and unfortunately getting a petite ring wont allow for the best and safest healing. The ring itself is also too small in diameter and isn't allowing the ear to swell in its natural shape and is instead forcing it around the style of jewelry. This constant pressure will not only change the shape of the piercing channel to a curve, it will also encourage the growth of scar tissue to stop the consistent agitation. This can even cause migration to the point the piercing is unable to be saved by switching to an appropriate diameter and gauge.
To stop the consistent problems, we switched out to a flat back style of jewelry with a bezel set gem so it wouldn't irritate the irritation further.
Another thing to consider is Toledo is a very humid environment. That means we're going to experience more swelling during the very first stage of our healing process. Because of this, I rarely start most piercing with hoops and opt for a post for the happiest healing. (Daiths and Septums excluded)
At the end of the day, you can get pierced with hoops to start off with but they will be large and chunky for the best healing.
