Select Health's Policy #3 restricts how CSWs and supervised interns can participate in clinical care, putting Utah's behavioral health training pipeline at risk. Fewer training opportunities now could mean fewer clinicians down the road.

We're calling on Select Health to reconsider how this policy affects students, supervisors, and the clients they serve.

The board for the Utah Association for Marriage and Family Therapy is sharing our concerns regarding SelectHealth’s recent announcement regarding “incident to” billing (aka policy #3).

Below is a Google Drive link available with a template letter for patients as well as a one page FAQ. Additional resources will be made available in this Google Drive folder as we continue our advocacy efforts. We recommend bookmarking it.

Select Health emailed an FAQ update to providers. Below is a link to the FAQ. While we appreciate that the effective date has been pushed out to November 1, 2026, this does not change the concerns we have regarding access to care. We are preparing to issue a statement and guidance to our members. Watch our social media and your inboxes later this week.

🤖The Office of AI is conducting a survey that will lead to policy recommendations for AI in healthcare. Please take a moment to read their statement below and take the survey. 🖥️

"The Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) and Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) are collaborating to gain your valuable insights on how AI is used in the state of Utah and how policy around AI should be shaped.

The Utah Office of AI Policy (OAIP) has created a survey for DOPL-licensed clinicians in order to develop a healthcare AI liability framework. This survey aims to capture how clinicians across the state are using AI tools in practice and how they think liability should be structured when AI contributes to healthcare delivery. It covers real-world adoption of AI tools, institutional readiness, attitudes toward AI's benefits and risks, and views on how liability for AI-related patient harm should be allocated among clinicians, vendors, and institutions. Your responses will directly inform policy recommendations on healthcare AI liability, ensuring the resulting framework reflects Utah's specific needs based on how AI is actually used in clinical settings."

Clinical supervision plays an important role in public protection, clinician development, and the long-term health of the behavioral health workforce.

Supervision is a specialized responsibility that requires preparation and training beyond clinical experience and time.

Supervisors are entrusted with developing competent clinicians, navigating ethical and legal responsibilities, and helping ensure quality care for the clients those clinicians serve.

The shift to require a minimum of 8 hours in supervision training instead of 20 seems inadequate to provide high-quality supervisors for associate therapists.

We recognize the need to expand access to supervision and support workforce growth.

Access and quality can, and should, advance together.

⏰ If you were pursuing licensure before May 1, 2024, your grandfathering is coming to an end! You will either need to apply for licensure before January 1, 2027 or be prepared to transition to our current licensing laws found in Utah code 58–60. Also, just because you were grandfathered into the old licensing laws does not mean you’re grandfathered into the old rules. You will likely need CEs on top of the required two hours of su***de prevention. We recommend emailing DOPL to determine how many prorated hours of CEs you need.
