Here we go again, almost exactly a year later and measles is in northeast Kansas again.
Here’s what you need to know about the vaccine.
1. Babies < 6 months are not eligible for a vaccine.
2. Babies 6 months to age 1 may come in for an MMR vaccine. This dose does not count towards the 2 vaccine series. But it will provide protection of 93%.
3. Children 1 year to age 3 may come in for their second dose of MMR, as long as it is 1 month from their first dose. The second dose provides protection up to 97%. This dose does count towards their 2 dose series.
4. Children who have received 2 doses do not need additional MMR vaccine.
5. If you were born between 1957 and late 1980’s, you may need an additional MMR vaccine to protect you. It was during this time most people received only 1 dose of vaccine.
6. Please do not give your children vitamin A. It is not going to prevent measles and it may cause liver damage
