Why is chronic pain so hard to diagnose? We've talked before about how different groups of people are less likely to seek treatment or be taken seriously when describing their pain but there are also factors within the medical field that cause a lack of diagnosis. For one, the conditions that cause chronic pain are relatively newly discovered so there is not a lot of history of treatment. Doctors are still learning to treat chronic pain. Because of the lack of understanding, some doctors are unwilling to acknowledge the field as a serious field of study, resulting in a lack of funding for research. Separately, it is sometimes the case that chronic pain has no distinguishable cause to our current understanding.
