The nurse who designed adult bibs that look like real shirts

A bib should protect clothes, not make someone feel less like themselves. That belief inspired Paige Meyer, a nurse in Victoria, Australia, to design adult bibs resembling ordinary button-up shirts.

While helping patients eat, Paige felt traditional bibs could undermine their dignity. The idea was personal, too: she had watched her grandmother live with dementia and emphysema, and understood how hard it could be for families to see a loved one needing that help.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, Paige returned to sewing and adapted an online pattern into “dignity bibs.” Made from shirt fronts, the coverings protect clothing during meals while looking like everyday attire.

“Dignity bibs are designed to protect clothing from mealtime mishaps while providing dignity by not looking like a bib,” Paige told The Courier.

Her mother and younger sister helped sew them. In 2021, Paige set a goal of making 50 bibs each month to donate to local nursing homes and special schools.

She explained her purpose this way: “As a nurse, my aim is to promote dignity to all of my patients, and I believe this is just one way I can help.”

The design offered more than protection from spills. It showed how practical care can respect a person’s identity and dignity. 💖✨
